Traveling/ vacation after surgery

Recommended Posts

At the beginning of the year I planned a week vacation to MI to visit my family (parents, sister and niece and nephews) the beginning of July since my favorite Kiddos will be out of school. Well my surgery was scheduled just two weeks prior to my planned trip.

Since I will already be on leave from work 3-6 weeks as needed I figured that maybe I could reschedule my trip for week 4.

My question is, for those that have had RYN how did you feel 4 weeks out? Do you think you would have been able to do a a couple hour plane ride? Once I am there I can take it as easy as I want and my plan is really just to hang out with the family and play with the niece and nephews ( my favorite kiddos ). They are also super supportive of my surgery, so I am not worried about the diet / food issue.

So do you think this would be possible or should I just try to plan something later in the year?

You should be able to fly without issue (I think there are others that did), but I will warn you that you may be tired. I think it is totally doable, but be sure to find a shake now that you can tolerate as you will definitely need to supplement that early out. (I still drink 1 Premier Protein ready to drink shake per day at 1 year post-op to hit my Protein goals, plus I have come to really enjoy them.) You will only be able to eat VERY small amounts at that stage and possibly need some pureed / soft foods, so maybe you can prepare your family for those - refried Beans, laughing cow cheese (or other soft cheeses), MAYBE thinly sliced deli turkey, greek yogurt, etc. It is so great that your family is supportive, but know now that it will be a little difficult being around family and all that food at that early out. It will not be impossible, but just expect it to be a little hard and give yourself a little grace and a little time alone if you get overwhelmed.

Good luck and have fun!

I'm traveling to Vegas at 6 weeks. I don't think I'd want to travel until I get to the soft food stage. I'll be three weeks out tomorrow and I don't think I'd want to travel while still on the pureed food stage and I definitely wouldn't travel while still on liquids!

Thank you for this information! I think a lot will just depend on how I feel.

I am travelling at 4 weeks out. I am 3 weeks today, I'm tolerating pureed/soft foods pretty well (with the exception of twice), and I feel pretty good.

I leave for Florida on the 18th.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
