Starting My Journey 5/28/16

Recommended Posts

Hey y'all!

I'm starting my sleeve journey hopefully by the end of next month (June 2016). I've been overweight the majority of my life and am finally ready to be comfortable in my skin again. I'll be a self pay so everything is moving very quickly for me.

I had my initial consult Wednesday, May 25th. During the consultation I learned the differences between the band, the sleeve, and the bypass and opted for the sleeve. I felt the sleeve would be the safest bet for me.

I have a blood clotting disorder (Factor 5 Leiden) and had to schedule an appointment with a hematologist to get the all clear for surgery. That appointment is scheduled for June 7th along with my nutrition class. The nutrition class will cover the post op diet along with do's and don't's.

Once I get the all clear from the hematologist, it should be smooth sailing. I was told I would be scheduled within one to two weeks after my hematologist appointment.

I'm currently at 223 and my goal weight is 140. I'm so ready for this journey! I'll be updating my journal along the way. If you'll be having your surgery near the end of June please let me know so we can support each other!

Just for fun, a friend of mine who is a photographer will be doing a before photo shoot in a week and an after photo shoot a year from now. I have also been stocking up on the cutest drinkware I can find in the hopes that if I can make the liquid diet fun it might be easier. ;) I want to make it all as positive as I can.

I apologize if I rambled, but I want to be able to look back and remember all the details. :) I'll be sure to post throughout my procedure and will check in with progress along the way.

Much love from Alabama!

Thank you, both! I've been reading every story I come across as well. The ones I've enjoyed the most were the very detailed journals, so I thought one more couldn't hurt. :)

Sugary sweetheart, it will be fun to have another summer sleever's journey to follow!

I had my nutrition and fitness meeting today, along with my hematologist appointment. I learned so much in the nutritional part of the meeting! I learned what my meal plan will be following surgery and it looks completely doable! Protein Protein protein!

My hematologist put me on blood thinner permanently :( but he cleared me for surgery!

I'm still set to have my surgery June 27th. I start my pre op diet the 20th and will start updating more then.

I started my Pre-Op diet today. One week until I go under the knife! I'm down a little bit since my bariatric class (from 224 to 221) and hoping to get below 220 by my surgery date. I go for pre-admission day Wednesday. It's beginning to feel real! I'm including a copy of my pre-op diet for anyone who is interested.post-293223-14664569396572_thumb.jpg

I hope none of this happens to you! From what I have searched, it is not typical? I am 6 days post surgery. I'm 54 years old and I must say that this surgery was far more difficult than I anticipated. I've read where other people go back to work after one week and I'm thinking NO WAY!!! My goal was to return in two weeks and I just don't see it happening. I was nauseated the first couple of days but that has subsided. I feel very tired, my incisions are very sore, I am experiencing gas pains in the chest and abdominal areas. I feel extremely bloated. There was a 10 lb weight gain post surgery that is starting to subside. I did not have a bowel movement for four days. Prayers would be appreciated! One positive note is that I do not feel hungry. That part is TRUE! I hope that I can move around more tomorrow to alleviate the gas. It's just not lady-like to even talk about that subject. Good luck to you!

Hello ThatKaylorGirl... Atlanta here :) Just curious if you might be using Alabama Weight Loss Surgery in Birmingham? I have an appt there on Tuesday to start the scheduling process. I'm hoping to schedule surgery by August since I'm also choosing the self pay option

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
