Does anyone's goal weight still leave them "overweight" or "obese"?

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if anyone else's goal weight still leaves them in the overweight or obese range according to BMI. My goal weight is 172lbs, which would put me at a BMI of about 29.5 (still overweight). When I get there, I might decide to keep going to 155lbs, which would still leave me overweight with a BMI of 27.5. Is anyone else in the same boat? Do you think we should be aiming for "healthy" weights?

Mine will too! I think the BMI scale is completely unrealistic and I don't want to be skin & bones. As far as I'm concerned - that's neither healthy or attractive! I'm okay with being overweight on the BMI chart. The scale says I would be considered "healthy weight" if I weighed 104lbs (I'm 5'2"). I can't even imagine.

My wife lectures me about being too skinny. I am at 191 still considered "overweight" till I reach 178. She is just not used to me being a normal weight. That being said, I am not wanting to lose more weight, but the way I've learned to eat compels me to continue losing VERY SLOWLY. I've only dropped a couple of pounds in the last month. People just need time to adjust to the new us.

YES. I would have to get to 129 to have a healthy BMI, and my goal is 160. I will re-evaluate when I get to 160. I can't even wrap my mind around being *that* small.

@@provenzee - My normal BMI would have me at 163, I am 175. At 53, I am not looking forward to anymore skin dragging behind me, or flopping (TMI) in front of me. I am working towards the 160s, at 5'7+

I just saw my doctor at my 1 year and he didn't question my current weight just said "Wow!" - I will take that as a "atta girl".

I think you should settle at a weight you're happy, comfortable and healthy with. BMI is a poor indicator of health anyway.

That being said, I'm at the very highest end of a "normal" BMI right now. 7 more pounds higher and I'd be considered "overweight".

Meh.

At the lectures I've been to, surgeons have indicated that their general goal is to get you to Overweight, or straddling the Overweight/Healthy BMI of 25.

Their argument is that statistically, Overweight people live longer than people with an underweight or healthy BMI. (I don't have the study names, but I do remember that making headlines a while back)

"When all is said and done, usually more has been said than done. "

I was just sleeved on 4/25 and at my two week post op follow up the surgeon and I both agreed that 155-160 lbs for me would be a good, healthy, and realistic goal to work towards as I have fairly large bone mass. I'm 5'5 and a normal healthy weight for me is supposed to be between 120 and 140 lbs. I just can't fathom being that small. I haven't weighed that little since I was 12 or 13 years old! I was the same height then as I am now, btw. I like my body being more curvalicious than the skinny girl I was in junior high school. I like my hips, my large breasts, and my big ol' booty and frankly, so does my husband! I'm not too concerned with how much I'm going to weigh in a year from now as long as I'm healthy AF!! :P

My normal BMI is 141. I'm at 181 now which is my Drs goal weight. I'd like to try for 150 (this puts me at overweight) but that is my goal for now

I just recently saw this study too, actually. So I'm golden! ;)

You are going to find that a weird phenomenon happens the closer we get or even when we get to our "first" goal weights. We want to push it and see how much lower we can actually go. Especially when our bodies want to keep losing. I'm sure others can vouch for me when I say once the health part happens, the vanity part kicks in. Right or wrong it happens ;)

I'm still a fatty according to the BMI chart. That said, my pants are an 8, and my actual body fat is in the athletic range.

I don't give a rat's ass about the BMI indicator. Most athletes show as overweight or obese because of the way they are built.

The BMI chart is bull poopy.

my actual body fat is in the athletic range.

THIS ultimately is a good indicator of health.

When I hit my goal weight I will still be obese. The BMI weight I need to be for my height is way to skinny for my body frame. I'm 5'9 and should be 165-170. Not in my book I shouldn't. Lol

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
