Too little caloric intake causing stall?

Recommended Posts

I'm in a stall now - been almost three weeks and I'm only 7 weeks out (almost 8).

My nut says 500 calories or less with <15 g of carbs a day until all excess weight is lost.

I personally think this is too low and I worry it will wreck my metabolism.

I've been eating a little more (closer to 600-800 cals depending on the day) but still am not losing!

600-800 calories may not be enough.

It isn't too low. I promise, I was between 300-450 calories until I was several months post op.

My stall seems to have ended...but I won't be holding my breath. I've lost and regained the same 2 lbs over and over. I knew there would be stalls but had no idea they would be this early out and last so long.

300-450 IS way too low... trust me..

I was on low calories for years after my band and it completely ruined my metabolism. .. i gained weight even eating veggies once i had it removed.

I am sleeved now because of resetting my metabolism.

Do not let your calories get too low, your body needs food to function, repair and thrive... limiting calories this low might be okay for the short term, but long term will cause all sorts of issues.

Please be careful

As I said, I was at 300-450 until I was several months post-op. That calorie goal increased over time. it obviously worked for me, because I never stalled until I was 1 year post-op and and 90% of my goal. I have and will continue to trust the advice given by my nutritionist.

@@aelovelady - Have you seen the recent news about Biggest Loser and the contestants who regained so much because their metabolism was ruined by eating so little? I am very surprised your NUT gave you that advice, but too each his own I suppose. Just so newbies are aware, I will say that you are certainly in the minority on this subject though.

I'm currently 7 weeks out from surgery and at my last nutritional appointment 2 weeks ago we were told we should be taking in 1000 calories. I find that to be a bit high, but I'd say I probably get at least 700-800 calories in daily. I currently walk 30 minutes at least 4-5 times per week, and am planning on adding some resistance training in the next week or two. Every body seems to have different guidelines according to who and where they had surgery. I'm through The Cleveland Clinic who works as a team with you on your journey through the WLS from beginning to end. I trust every single person I've either already had or have contact with since the beginning.

@@Amylou I'm in a similar boat. I'm eight months out and 32 pounds from goal.

If it helps, my surgeon told me at six months the last pounds will come off really slowly. I asked if 40 pounds by one year would be doable. He said yes, but I'd REALLY have to have my game face on. Challenge accepted! I've lost 10 pounds since then, but I'm currently stalled.

I think you're getting really good advice on this thread. Definitely change it up. Your calorie count sounds like it's on the low side, so maybe increasing would work. Personally, I've noticed in the last few days that my workout regimen has gotten stale. I'm planning to challenge myself more and see what happens.

Good luck to you! We've got this!!

For everyone's information, I am between 800 and 1000 calories have been at my goal for a while. It would never occur to me to advise someone to contradict the advise of their professional doctors and nutritionist, ever.

Nutritionists are just people who took some classes about nutrition - and depending on the beliefs of the person teaching or the nutritionist themselves (I have known many who are clueless) - they educate patients on diet and nutrition. I don't know why people assume they are the Gods of nutrition and Bariatric surgery diet plans. Not all advice from NUTs is good advice! Your body and brain needs more than 300-450 calories to function properly. It would also be very difficult to get enough Protein from food at that calorie intake. Your Nutritionist is doing a disservice by suggesting you keep your calories that low.

Enough already, you have absolutely no knowledge of my nutritionists or physicians qualifications.

And as I mentioned several times for those who read, I was at 300-450 for a period of time post op. I have long since past that time and calorie limit, I have successfully reached my goal. My current goal is 800-1000 calories a day.

800-1000 calories a day and you are over a year out? That's still crazy low. Im 10 months out and am at 800-1000 calories a day. Sorry, but people have a right to be a little shocked at such low a calorie count.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
