Doc said weight loss plan was a waste of time. I need encouraged.

You're right, personal trainers can train anyone. I have worked with regular trainers at gyms and renowned trainers that are known for working with morbidly obese people and have helped them shed 300+ lbs in a year without surgery. It was explained to me by pointing out that while working out on land you are carrying all of your weight. That is obviously a harder workout than if you're in the Water. And if the workout is easier, in most cases it isn't as effective.

I agree anything is better than nothing. And you will lose some with Water workouts. It will just always pale in comparison. Water is great if your injured and literally can't do a thing else, but it will never be as effective as walking or running.

As long as a personal trainer doesn't follow the practices of The Biggest Losser then I would agree that MOST personal trainers should be able to work with the morbidly obese.

This brings to mind a recent reality show where they had trainers gain weight so that they would know how hard it is to work out when you are overweight, out of shape, and obese.

It was quite interesting to see how many of their preconceived ideas were altered.

If someone hasn't experienced obesity first-hand, then they better be very empathetic and good listeners in my book.

If you have worked with these world renowned trainers, why is your BMI so high?

@@PissiChrissi You're missing part of my plan anyway - I was going to START with Aqua aerobics.. - my end goal is to be able to do an hour of laps at least 4-5 times a week in addition to aqua zumba at least 1-2 times a week.. I have a feeling that will lose the pounds. Also I have an elliptical and I'm not afraid to use - when I get to that point and if I like it - in addition to all those other things. I also have a dog who loves to bike but I haven't been able to do that in quite a while.

But that said.. I can lose the amount of weight I want doing Water exercise - it will not be all aerobics.. but it can be done and will be done and when I do I'm going to write my surgeon a letter with before and after pics and tell him exactly how I lost the weight and if you'd like me to send you one as well I'll be happy to. But unless you're going to support me and all the other people in this thread who lost a lot of weight due to various Water exercises then just take your negative opinion elsewhere please. It's not needed nor desired here.

While I don't appreciate anything about your question I will still answer it. It was many years ago and I wasn't able to keep working with them for a myriad of reasons. I haven't worked out in years and haven't worked out with a trainer in many more years. I lost a lot of weight with the trainers and then my financial situation and living situation changed. My bmi increased drastically after I lost everything in a house fire a year ago.

I've lost 112 pounds (19 since surgery 4 weeks ago and 93 on my own over the past year) and I've done nothing but aqua exercises, the recumbent bike, and walking. I do Aqua bootcamp 2-4 times a week and I burn 600-800 calories per session. It is an absolute blast and the Water provides great resistance when you are running in the Water.< /p>

@@PissiChrissi

If you haven't worked out in years or with a trainer for years, why are you giving someone else advice and pissing on their plan when they are just getting started? Why not sweep around your own front door before you sweep around someone else's.

@@Soon2BHealthyAggie

Running in Water is harder than running in sand, since you have the resistance all around you. It is an awesome workout.

No worries. If you want hand holding and people to lie to you to make you feel better have at it :)

Hey, @@beck 90 ... I happen to think your doc is off base -- and that you've got a good exercise plan, given your current weight and situation.

But I gotta also say that when you make a post on this message board, people are allowed to chime in and offer their opinion. You (or I) may not agree with them. But if you throw it out there, you will get all kinds of responses. Just because people don't agree with you doesn't mean they don't get to offer their opinion, too.

And that's my opinion about opinions. ;)

Seeing as how it seems that you are the one person in this thread who doesn't agree with me I'm pretty sure they're not lying to me.

Again, let me reiterate a third time, no one said you can't lose weight with Water aerobics. You can. But it pales in comparison to the weight lost with walking, running, elliptical, etc. The people who benefit from it the most are the people that have a lot more weight to lose and those people would still lose double plus some if they did their workout outside of the pool. Or did vigorous laps. It isn't my belief. It is a fact. Plain and simple.

it's not a race, dear. it's a marathon. This is a forever for the rest of your life change. you would probably think I am loosing slowly. WHO CARES. I am loosing. and in fact, I think people who loose more slowly making real, sustainable changes are far more likely to KEEP the weight off.

If people were being totally honest, you can lose all the weight you want with diet, and not exercise. Your body will burn fat for energy without exercise. Exercising is about fitness, not weight loss.

@@VSGAnn2014 - that's true .. but her responses were inflammatory and.. honestly pretty downer and mean.. and at that point is when I ask people to leave. I can handle if someone doesn't agree with me but be polite about it.. but when they say things like "Well if you want people to lie to you go ahead" - because I'm very much a Thumper person.. I believe this forum exists to offer encouragement (and yes correction but always POSITIVELY done) and if you can't do one of those two things.. then you should resist from giving your opinion on a thread - especially to someone who started the thread saying they were already down and out.. that's like kicking someone when they're down.

Agreed. But as I stated in my previous reply, I imagine her doc was likely encouraging her to push herself in her honeymoon period. You don't get that time back.

She's still pre-op. I could only walk about 20 minutes, slowly during pre-op. now I am walking 3 times that, and every day as opposed to a few times a week. She's not even at the honeymoon phase yet. and still, if a person doesn't find a particular form of exercise to be enjoyable they will not continue to do it. I just want people to move. find what you love, and do it. because if you do that you will still be doing so in 10 years. There is no expiration date on the sleeve.

If you read my first post again I didn't insult you and I was positive while disagreeing with you. I even encouraged you. I never claimed anyone was lying. I don't think anyone is outright lying to you. I think they're misinformed. If having an opinion that differs from yours is a downer, inflammatory, and discouraging to you, I'd say you're probably in for a tough ride in life in general.

I do wish you the best of luck in your journey. I didn't tell you what I knew to hurt you. No one wants to hear it. I wish Water aerobics were as effective! I love them and prefer them go hard, grueling workouts! That just isn't the case unfortunately.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
