Protein, Protein, Protein

Recommended Posts

So I'm curious about the Water intake recommendations. I've never been much of a Water drinker and on a good day I might get 32oz in.

I understand post-op during recovery you might need more for healing and to get things going, but what about during maintenance? Do they want you to drink 64 oz of water daily forever? I just can't go to the bathroom that frequently at my job, lol!

Teapot -- you're used to what you're used to.

But you can get used to new things.

And that's what WLS success is all about -- doing things differently in the future.

IMHO.

Wondering if you can have too much Protein at once? I made my Protein shake this morning and it had 49g of Protein. I used unjury chocolate splendor fairlife 2% milk and oikos triple zero coffee yogurt.

http://asmbs.org/patients/life-after-bariatric-surgery

Q: How much protein do I need daily?

A: Most patients get 60-80 grams daily, but some may require more depending on their response to surgery or their type of operation. Your dietitian can provide more detailed information.

Q: Can I take all of the protein in one dose?

A: Protein should be taken in multiple doses, across multiple meals or healthy Snacks. The body cannot absorb more than approximately 30 grams at once. Also, protein is a nutrient that helps us feel fuller, longer. If we try to include Proteins in each of our meals or healthy Snacks, we’re less likely to feel hungry when it’s not time to eat.

Excess of 30g in a hour is just wasted by your body.

@teapot

As you lose weight your bladder will have more room in your torso and be able to hold more, so drinking more won't necessarily mean you are urinating more in the long term.

We all need AT LEAST 64 oz of Fluid whether we have surgery or not. We do get some Fluid from foods, so pre-op you will get some if you are eating a lot of fresh food.

Post-op, you will get less from food so you definitely need to stay on top of the water.

Hey that's a great question! Somewhere I read your body can only process a certain amount of Protein at a time. Veterans, any insight?

ASMBS would be the authority and they have it on their website.

My Doctor told me the same thing, aim for 20 at a time and no more than 30, the body can only absorb so much. Same reason why you don't take all your supplements at the same time.

Teapot. Make sure you get the Water as well for your bowel movements. Trust me. Not fun!

I have been reading with alarm several posts from people lately who have recently had surgery and don't seem to have gotten the message about how important Protein is to their healing and their weight loss.

It is as if a whole group have completely skipped any nutrition education and think that it is ok to starve themselves.

Protein is critical (a minimum of 80-100 grams, depending on your surgeon's recommendation for your specific needs)

Fluid is critical (at least 64 oz.).

You do not get bonus points for not reaching those goals. In fact, it will slow your weight loss and healing.

(Climbing down off of my soap box for now.)

I agree/disagree. I am three years out and I still can't always meet my protein/water requirements. I couldn't even come close for the first year + and my surgeon only advised 64-80gr of protein. :)

I did the best I could, healed like a champ and reached goal with a 110+ pound weight loss in 9 months.

I do agree that you should do protein first and that protein is key in healing and loss, but I am not sure that you have to reach such high numbers to succeed/heal.

:D

Yep, I agree. I had a talk with my NUT about my crazy week (see: http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/368141-i-think-i-should-have-learned-something/)

She reminded me that nutrition is a long term game, "not just one and done." This is why I track. I know some days will be 80g of protein, some will be 120 and some 100. But when I look across a week I can see a trend. But when I see an aberration and see how it fits into the bigger picture this is helpful.

You see there are some days when I see major calorie/protein deficit, but the next day there is some extra, and two days later there is a little more, but it stops. Mainly because I remind myself in writing.

OK I have to chime in. Most Mexican surgeons recommend no Protein for the first week. Only broths and clear sugar free clear fluids, second week add Protein Shakes and creamy Soups, third week add mushy foods, fourth week chicken and fish as tolerated. I did feel as though I was STARVING the first week. I read on this forum US doctors were allowing protein shakes the first week. So at night I would mix 2oz shake with 2oz Water and tolerated it well (at day 5) and I didn't die. LOL It sucks that some people feel like they are starving. I think those patients need to call their NUT right away. There are no hard fast rules. Its what your body can tolerate within reason without using food too soon.

Hi everyone, I have 2 questions I'm hoping to find answers for.

1) Do I need to worry about sucralose being in my Protein Shake? I have read in a couple of places that you should find one that has none of that in it.

2) PLEASE suggest flavored waters that I can drink. I am 13 months post op and have lost 120 lbs., but I never get enough Water because I HATE drinking plain water. It would be great to find a flavored one that also has Protein. Any and all suggestions greatly needed!!

Thanks much,

Cassie

One trick for me to get more Water is to put a flavored tea bag in my bottle of water. Decaf or Lipton or orange. Anything to change just water. I don't heat the water up .. I just toss it in.

Truly. Water is one of the hardest goals for me.

I include my coffee in the amount of liquids daily also.

Most additives have a funky taste to me ( and I'm not sure what is in them)so I don't use the drops or packets.

Hope you can search around and find a way to get your fluids in.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
