TMI : 4 days post-op -- can I have prune juice?

Recommended Posts

I have not had a complete bowel movement in about 10 days. By complete, I mean full evacuation of my bowels in that time. I was on liquids pre-op and whenevee I change my diet, I become constipated.

I told my surgeon and he said if I remain hydrated then Constipation should not be a problem. Well, my urine is fairly clear so I assume I am hydrated and getting in liquids. It is at a point when my bowels feel full which is adding to my discomfort. There is gas then there is being full of poo and I'm full of poo.

My surgeon said that I can have juices sometimes but they cannot have pulp. I am thinking of doing warm prune juice with Mirada but I am not sure if prune juice has pulp. What worked for you?

Thanks

Prune juice does not have pulp. Since you're uncomfortable, I say go for it.

For people who are not experiencing discomfort, don't do it.

I was in support group last night and someone asked this question and response was miralax

Mirada should have been miralax. Auto-correct.

Miralax is polyethylene glycol. It works by increasing the amount of Water in the intestines to help move things along.

Milk of Magnesia is magnesium hydroxide. It also works by increasing the amount of Water in the intestines.

Prunes contain sorbitol, which is a natural sugar that loosens the stool. Eating prunes is better than drinking the juice, because it also adds Fiber. If you are not allowed the eat the fruit, then drinking the juice is the next best thing.

Personally, I always prefer the natural route, if possible.

Sorry for the gory details below.

I drank warm prune juice with miralax. I believe there may have been some level of impaction because I had to elevate my legs to evacuate some of the hard stools.

I have say the pressure is gone. It was becoming uncomfortable to even sit, but now I can feel my stomach and bowels are empty.

Thank you all!

Take stole softner. Don't let it get to that point were you have a hard time. Been there and it was the most horrible pain/experience in my life. If you haven't gone in 10 days you need to get relief asap.

Take docusate sodium in liquid form (later as your diet allows you can take the capsule or tablet version). It won't make you go, but it's a stool softener so that when you do go, you aren't going to strain hard and add pain to your abdomen.

Glad you had relief. My Nut told me to add a pro biotic to help restore the good bacteria in my gut.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
