Waist trainers.....what's the scoop?

Recommended Posts

I wish I listened to my grandmother and always wore a real girdle. I would have never got so fat.

Spanx are complete BS. They don't provide enough control at all.

I can definitely say that wear Shapewear helps a lot. My hourglass shape is really coming along and my fats in the back are flattening out.

That kind of extreme waist training is bad for people, but there are a lot of benefits to wear firm control shapewear.

I plan on having plastics eventually but until I am going to exhaust all options.

Take a corset to your surgeon and see what they have to say. Prior to my procedure I wore a corset that reduced my waist from 39" to 34". I wouldn't dare do it now. That's a lot of constant pressure being applied and your organ(s) are already altered by surgery. Then there are "corsets" that don't cinch at all, it's basically like wearing a belt. If it's the fashion look you like, lose substantial weight first, then wear a corset that requires no cinching.

Let's see -- you've just cut out 85% of your stomach. You're losing weight. Your gastrointestinal system and other organs are basically shifting around inside you. Your lymph system and circulatory system and kidneys and excretory systems are working overtime to excrete all the waste products from rapid weight loss.

And you want to wear a corset designed in the 1800s that pushes your ribs in toward your still-healing sleeve and compresses your body's lymphatic and circulatory systems, your heart and your lungs.

What could possibly go wrong?

It's responses like that piss me off and make me strongly consider leaving Bariatric pal. I came here for OPINIONS not snarky responses such as this. I never once said I was going shopping this weekend to purchase one. I was simply fishing for reviews of those who HAVE used them or researched them. That is it. And for the record- I didn't cut out 85% of my stomach, I had my organs rerouted and a pouch created. If I missread your response, I apologize, but your entire response came off as rude and inappropriate for this discussion. Almost motherly if you will...and that's not how I prefer to be spoken to.

Hate to break it to you, kid, but I get to express my opinions here, too.

Tough titty.

P.S. In case you didn't understand my opinion, I think a waist trainer as a concept -- physically and culturally -- is a stupid idea. And it's really stupid for someone who's just had WLS to employ. IMHO, of course.

All I'm saying is that if "opinions" were expressed in a more tactful manner, it would be beneficial for everyone. But...I somehow forgot we were surrounded by the WLS police who know all and are entitled to be crude and bich*y because they're now vets or what have you. You have newbies here who ONLY view post and are too intimidated to ask questions or request help because they see responses from people like you. People who immediately feel the need to belittle someone over something simple. Aka...keyboard warriors. I didn't ask if I could cheat and advance my diet without my doctors orders. I didn't ask if I could resume carbonated drinks. I didn't ask if I could pick up smoking again. I didn't ask if I could begin weight training and dismiss my doctors orders to limit myself to 15 lbs for 2 more weeks. I believe my question was valid and for information only.

Now, had I gone out, purchased a waist trainer, tried it for a few days and then hit up BP for opinions, I may have reacted differently to your response. But it was a simple question. :)

I don't think there is any need from anyone here to berate or belittle another's inquiry on opinions. With that said, some people are just snarky by nature, and you have to be able to ignore those. When a response is not given to the snarkiness, they will stop because nobody is defining them.

Just my honest opinion.

Every time some one asks about waist training it's the same thing.

If you want a lot of support from the board, ask about cheating on your spouse or dumping them because they are still fat and the support will roll in.

Just don't take it serious. If you want to ask about things beauty related weight-loss surgery boards are the worst place. You have so many people that hate themselves and on top of hating themselves they have neglected themselves for years. So they are middle aged trying to learn about fashion, hair and makeup.

If you want to talk about looking good and being pretty this isn't the place.

@@Renkoss thank you! We'll said!

@@OutsideMatchInside what you say makes total sense. I will keep that in mind for future post and will leave them to WLS only. I forget how many bitter people there are in this world who take their self hatred out on others. Not saying that is the case here at all.

@@OutsideMatchInside and @@sassyfrass23 Just want to point out if you want to talk about skin removal surgery or whatnot, the community in the Plastic Surgery forum here on BariatricPal is pretty supportive.

Waist trainers are just a fad.

Nothing more. Nothing less.

And to add, my waist trainer is my gym and a good ol pair of running shoes.

I agree with Babbs. Remember back when things like the machines that shook your whole insides were popular? You didn't have to do a thing but stand there with a belt around you and let this machine shake your body. What nonsense, but women fell for it. We unfortuntely will fall for whatever is out there that we think is a viable tool to give us what we've longed for. There is nothing like regular exercise and walking to give your body the shape it was born to be.

So, I have no idea except to share my own experiences. I thing I was overly concerned with stuff like this early on. I got to goal, and my waist was still over 30" - OMG - my mom always told me she couldn't imagine a young lady with a waist bigger than 28". I tried waist trainers. I tried working out about 2 hours a day. At some point, I realized that I was starting the process of trading one obsession for another... I DID look firmer, more toned fit into fitted clothes when I was working out like a maniac, doing strength training etc. That was 2013 - my year of hitting goal and as I like to think of it "my year of crazy".

Well, 3 years later the waist trainers sit unused. I stay fit so I can DO fun things. People that matter think I am one hot mama - and damn I am so much happier!

I guess this has little to do with waist trainers, but more sharing my own experience of getting my head on straight about how to live a great life.

As for waist trainers, you can actually change your ribs and internal organs, but I think if you are sensible about it you can get good temporary results without harming yourself. I just think that health should be the priority, and so as long as you don't go overboard, if it makes you happy - why not?

If/when you have plastics - do NOT use a waist trainer until recommended by surgeon. Recovery from plastics is no joke and you need good circulation combined with appropriate compression - not squeeze you hard kind of compression.

Good luck whatever you decide!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
