I want to let everybody know that you need to thank your support person. I am a support person but I am also on my own rny journey. If you haven't hugged, thanked, or told your support person you love them please do now. Being a support person is hard. We watch the people we love be hurt, suffer, cry, and be generally sick. We know that the rny, sleeve, or band is hard on the person who had the surgery. Just remember that we love you and want the best for you and that as a support person we have to be strong when you can't be. #bariatricsupport

My support person is my amazing boyfriend of 4 years. He went to EVERY SINGLE appointment with me. He even comes to my bariatric support group meeting every single month for the past 8 months. He went to the psych consult, he went to every check up, every nut appointment, he was there when I went under and there when I woke up. He eliminated bad food in our household and has adapted his diet to eat healthfully with me. He even sometimes reminds me to eat, and cooks different things for me when I'm having trouble making myself eat. I've told him twice today how thankful I am for him, and how lucky I am to have found him. I think I'll go right now to tell him again. :)

Do you think you can be successful without a support person? I like to think that I am my own support through this as I am in the other aspects of my life. I worry though that I will be making such a major change solo.

I can be your support person. I can at least be a pen pal

Well my SO has been an amazing support until surgery was scheduled. Now he's freaking out. I do have other health risk I was born with that is a huge concern and I know he's just worried. He is still a great support until he starts to think about recovery and surgery. He's been through heart surgeries with me and knows how hard it can be. He's excited for me but it is really hard on our "support people". He told me the other day he just wishes he could fix me. He would give anything to not have to watch me go through all my health issues and multiple surgeries. He's super easy going and I never really thought any of it bothered him until surgery was scheduled (May 4th) and he had a few beers and he told me how hard all of it is on him. Then felt bad for telling me. So yes thank your support people. It is hard on them...really hard.

It's very hard on the people around us who love us. They're not fighting the battle we are but they are sitting helplessly watching us fight and struggle and that hurts.

Your SO is scared and this is how he's showing it. He loves you and doesn't want to lose you. He just wants to relax and enjoy life with you. Soon enough he will get that wish. Good luck to you!!!

Prayers for a successful surgery and recovery! Prayers to your SO as well!

Interesting thought. I don't believe I HAVE one. I told very few people and so perhaps one difficult part has been that I don't really have what you're calling a "support person." I use this site a lot for support and share things with my shrink and my sponsor but I've been fairly alone with this. ... I think

We're here for you Pedro. Never hesitate to write to one of us! We're here! I'm sorry you don't have anyone close to you to help you and be there for you. That would make things harder but in a way your not listening to everyone else telling you what "they think" you should do! It's al you which can also be nice.

I wish you luck with your journey! When is or was your surgery? What are you having? And where are you located?

I think sometimes we are, our best support people even though we don't know each other personally, we truly know what it's like.

Yes, this site and you guys have been HUGE for me both pre and post op, more than even i realize

i had rny feb 10th so im 9 weeks post op, feel incredible, i mean incredible!!!I lost a ton of weight pre-op, really met the doc half way, had a very good exercise and meditation routine going though I was using Atkins which is certainly not something one would want to live on, but it worked to lose around 40 pre-op, now in only the 9 weeks I've lost quite a bit and will be at goal weight in another week or two. It's odd to hear people s[peak of losing phases lasting over a year but perhaps they had a lot more to lose. I'm 6' 2" and my high was 305, but decided to do this at 285, had the surgery at 248 and now I'm 197 as of this week. Good Lord...!!! I'm getting a lot of "stop right there" comments but I only listen to my team thanks again for the great support

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
