I suck at this protein thing!

Recommended Posts

Help! I'm 7 days post RNY... I can get fluids down okay but Premier shakes are repulsive to me now. I tried mixing them with other flavors and its doable, but then it adds volume so I barely get anything out if it.

I've also tried mixing isolate lemonade with Vitamin Water lemonade... I can stand that a little but then I can't after about 6 ounces (3 ounces at a time with 3 minutes in between sips... Then I give myself a 30 minute break)

I have GNC naturally unflavored Protein that I mixed with Soup, but again, the scoop is so huge that the volume is too much to get what I need...

I need some reliable Protein sources as I still have a week on full liquids and then 2 weeks on purée

Any advice is greatly appreciated...

You are just having a tough time with all this aren't you? I really feel for you. I don't have a problem drinking the Protein drinks, but I really do not have a whole lot of hunger, so I'm forcing myself to drink them.

Hang in there. It'll get better.

I probably shouldn't admit this out loud, but I'm going to be honest: I completely ignored my Protein requirement for the entire 2 weeks of the liquid stages. My NUT knew about it. It was hardly encouraged, but as she said "You can only do what you can do. Hydration is by far your top priority. You do have Protein stores from your pre-surgery intake that should carry you through to purees."

I did try. During the clear liquid week, I tried Syntrax Nectars, unflavored protein in Crystal Light, etc, and powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken Soup flavor (which I'd loved pre-op). All of them turned my stomach with the first sip. During the full liquid week I tried to return to my beloved Unjury shakes, but again, I couldn't stomach them. I bought three different brands to try that week. Still couldn't stomach them. It was just those 2 weeks, and in my case, I recovered just just fine. As soon as I hit the pureed stage I was able to easily exceed my protein goals, courtesy of both the ability to tolerate chicken and seafood right away as well as several glasses of Fairlife milk a day. I still have yet to find a protein supplement that goes down easily, but at this point I've learned that I'm not going to puke just because my stomach does a little flip, so I suck it up and choke them down anyway.

Now please don't misunderstand me, I'm not suggesting that you throw your hands up and say "Screw it, I'm done!" Perhaps a discussion with your own NUT is in order, as they have probably heard this issue many times before and will likely have some constructive suggestions.

I'm 2 weeks post op, and I was using Premier Protein also and couldn't stand them. I've tried a few different ones...Premier Protein, Isopure, Bariatric Advantage. I just started using unjury and it's amazing. It's not chalky or gritty. No bad aftertaste either. The chocolate splendor with skim milk tastes just like chocolate milk and it gives you 30 grams of protein in 8 ounces. Good price on it also. I believe it's 22.95 for a container and you get 17 servings per container. Good luck!

Isopure zero carb clear Protein really helped me. About 3 weeks in my Protein shake disgusted me. My nutritionist suggested just drinking Fairlife milk (as long as you can tolerate some lactose, although Fairlife is low carb). I was also able to drink WonderSlim shakes, kefir, and shakes with Greek yogurt (full or partial fat). The yogurt really changed the taste

Ambermj, I so feel for you. I am 2 months post RNY and I face every day with nausea. Eating/drinking through it is a challenge indeed. I'm told it will pass but no time frame given as to when. In the meantime, I'm on two meds for it. What helps me is drinking/eating really slowly; and nothing real cold or hot as that causes cramping in my new pouch. Keeping hydrated is so crucial. Get your Water in. I love grape so I add Hi-C or Kool-Aid sugar free liquid or crystals to my water. And again, you can't drink quickly anymore. Sip- sip-sip. Hang in there!

I am having such an issue with Protein. The thought of it makes me sick. I was fine the first two weeks post op, now I gag whenever I drink. I'm sure it's just something I will need to work through but I worry about hair loss. I'm 2 months post op and down only 36 lbs.

@@NewAngela

Fairlife is a very good option and by the way it is lactose free.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
