chia seeds? are they safe for sleeves?

Recommended Posts

Hello!

Recently I have seen a lot of people saying chia seeds are a good way to get some Protein and a ton of Fiber in.

I'm curious to try them, but I hesitate because chia seeds absorb Water, and become a gelatinous substance

That intrigues me, but makes me nervous because I don't know if that would be bad for a bariatric patient.

the nutrition info is " One ounce (about 2 tablespoons) contains 139 calories, 4 grams of Protein, 9 grams fat, 12 grams carbohydrates and 11 grams of Fiber, plus Vitamins and minerals."

Is that too many carbs/calories?

I feel like it might be fine if you presoak them? rather then eat them dry?

Does anyone know?

This sounds like a great question for your NUT. I would certainly wait until you are cleared for seeds before trying them.

Although I am not a fan of them the dietitian for my surgeon said chia seeds are fine once you're 3 months out.

I can't imagine ever eating chia seeds dry, tbh. They're small and too hard and get stuck in your teeth.

I am a huge fan of chia seed pudding. You can Google a million recipes for this, but my favorite is chia seeds, unsweetened almond milk, a banana, and cinnamon to taste. I'll probably consider adding Protein powder to this after surgery! I also sometimes put them in a smoothie.

I don't think I could handle an ounce though. I put a teaspoon in my yogurt and let it sit for a few minutes, really good that way.

If your doctor says no for right now, you can always buy a terra cotta statue and spread them on to grow as hair (Cha-Cha-Cha-Chia).

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
