How in the world have I gained 18 pounds in 5 days?!?!?!?

Recommended Posts

Just left. Had EKG first and just finished an echocardiogram. They also did blood work. I'm now up 30 pounds in 7 days. Legs/ankles so swollen I feel like they're going to bust. But they found nothing wrong. [emoji17]

Good news that it's not your heart. What's next?

I came straight to my gastric sleeve surgeon to see if he might know why, but not sure if they'll squeeze me in (even though no one else is in the waiting room as of now).

I have no idea what else to do.

Isn't your cardiologist conferring with the urologist who referred you? Your PCP ought to be involved. S/he coordinates your care between specialist so you are trying to make sense of all these body systems and what could be going on.

Not that being at the WLS surgeon is t a good idea. It is....I wonder if you're having an intolerance to pain meds?

I think if it were me, I'd be at the ER pretty soon if someone doesn't figure this out.

Please let us know what the WLS says.

Sorry you aren't getting the answers you need. Your bariatric surgeon should squeeze you in. If he/she doesn't have the answers you might need the ER. That much swelling is ridiculous!

I'm in agreement - you should probably go into the ER. What you are experiencing is NOT NORMAL they need to find out what is going on ASAP. 30lbs in a week could be dangerous.

I agree with going to the ER emergently. Didn't all this start when you went in for your kidney stones? All that edema sounds like kidney function.

Hi everyone. I'm sorry I can't reply to you all individually. I'm so very tired and overwhelmed. But I want to say I appreciate all of you that have shown compassion and concern for me. I'm forever grateful.

This has been one of the worst weeks of my life. 10 days ago (last Monday) I went in to my gastric sleeve surgeon for my 4-month check up. Everything was great!!! I had lost 90 pounds in 4 months. I went from walking 50 feet to walking up to 15 miles a day. My cholesterol and other blood tests were in great shape, etc.

Then just 1 week ago I was rushed to ER via ambulance and then rushed into kidney stone surgery and a stent put in. They even made me stay the night in the hospital.

And now 1 week later, I feel like I never had surgery 4 months ago. Official tally is that I'm UP 30 pounds in 7 days!!!!! I can't walk 5 feet without joint/ankle pain from the swelling/edema, etc. I can't walk without being winded and short of breath. My clothes are even tighter.

I just can't believe no one can find anything wrong with me.

I'm just tired…and disappointed … and feeling defeated. Maybe tomorrow I'll wake up 30 pounds lighter. I can hope and pray I guess.

Thanks for listening. It has meant the world to have you all on my side.

I'm going to sleep now.

Have you contacted your urologist? If nothing changes overnight I would really encourage you to go to the ER.

Hi. Yes I went to urologist yesterday. They ran some tests and couldn't find reason for weight gain so they got me into see cardiologist today. They also taught me how to self catheter since I had been having difficulty peeing.

Please call your urologist again or go to the

ER? Like right now. The swelling and shortness of breath are extremely concerning. These are both symptoms of renal failure. With the kidney stones and blood you need to be seen again. Please!

The cardiologist prescribed me a diuretic so I'm going to give it a couple days to see if it helps.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
