Lap band to gastric bypass revision info

Recommended Posts

I just had to do 3 appointments with nutrionist, and see a pulmonologist. I had a chest x-ray, upper gi, and blood work. The whole process was about 2 months.

liquid preop diet for 2 weeks. I was really hungry at first, but after the first 3 days I was fine. I also had to drink magnesium citrate this morning and Clear Liquids all day. Not to bad! I will update hopefully tomorrow after surgery.

Iwanttobethin please keep us updated after your surgery! We all sounds like we are in similar situations with the revision surgery. The gerd has been absolutely horrible for me as well, I understand your pain. I am now waiting for my insurance to approve the surgery. I wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery!!'

I will. It's now going to be sometime this Friday. So I'm glad I don't have to wait to long.

Hopefully, there won't be any problems with insurance. Good luck to you!

Hello! I am new to this forum and I am looking for some help/insight. I was banded in 2010 and lost over 90 pounds my first 15 months. Felt great and then I started having the same issues and problems that many people have, terrible reflux, vomiting, difficulty with solid food. Reflux so bad I can't lay down or eat. I am also having pain in my port site. Slider foods are the only thing I can eat and not get sick or get stuck. I get stuck on eggs!!! I am so over this lap band and deeply regret my choice. Several fills/Unfills/adjustments and I am still not where I need to be. My weight is creeping up close to surgery date weight and I am miserable most days. Anyone have the same issues? I have an appointment with a new surgeon next week (the surgeon that did my surgery is no longer in state) and I don't know what he will say. I am hoping and praying I can get a revision because I am miserable and uncomfortable daily. Any tips? Insurance issues? I am so appreciative of any support and insight.

I was banded in July 2005. I was never successful with the band. I might have lost 20 lbs all together with the band. I did a lot of dieting, just as I had my entire life, but I would only lose while I was eating 500 calories a day and then gain it back. At one point I was even heavier than when I started. I weighed 309 the day of my lap band. Eating bad things was fine, but as soon as I tried to eat lean Protein or vegetables it was uncomfortable going down or would get stuck. I felt like a failure once again. How was it possible to be such a loser that I couldn't even be successful at weight loss even after wl surgery. After 10 years lost with the band I decided to go to Mexico to have a revision to gastric done. The insurance that I have will not cover anything to do with obesity. :( The great news is after the revision the weight has been coming off steadily. I weighed 288 the day of surgery and at a little over 4 1/2 months I'm down to 227! The gastric has been better than I could have imagined. Anyone who has had the band and not had success please don't waste any more time. I spent 10 years being disgusted with myself because I didn't lose the weight that everyone bragged about, I've since seen that there are many of us who weren't successful. I eat about the same as I did with the band, but now I actually lose weight! :)

My story as well! Except I am a little further along. I had my band for nearly 12 years. Banded in 04. Lost 90 lbs. Trouble began. I converted to bypass on 9/15/15 and have been at my goal weight of 165 for 6 months. Life is good! This surgery is night and day from the band. My dr. still places bands and I scold him about it all the time. Success rate is much too low. Good luck!

How much have you lost with the bypass if you don't mind me asking? And how long did it take?

I am on process of fulfilling insurance requirements in order to get revision to RNY and I am nervous I won't lose will even with bypass. I have extremely slow metabolism, I hit a plateau 2nd week after lap band surgery, hearing that the weight loss is slower after revision makes me very nervous. I have about 120 lbs I want to lose to be at goal.

Guess I need some emotional pick me up here :)

I have lost 60 lbs since November 2015 with the revision. Best decision I have ever made!

Wow marimar66 your story is very similar to mine. I did have initial success with the band, losing 30kgs (75 pounds) but as problems developed each time i had the Fluid out to recover i would gain a bit back. 4 kgs here...5 kgs there... eventually after 5 years I've gained it all back. ..and spend 24 hours a day beating myself up for failing!!! Its worse than if id never had the band really.

I found out a couple of years ago that in Australia surgeons are paid more to temove the band than to put it in! Its a win win for the surgeons.

I would never recommend anyone have the band! I know there are some who have had success, but no one that I know personally. I have felt great since my revision and wished I had looked into having it along time ago. I'm now seeing my efforts pay off. :)

That is so exciting and great to hear! Congratulations on your success!

In tge beginning i was about the biggest success i had heard about from the band. I was happy with my rapid weight loss of 75#. But then it just stopped and it was such a struggle. So much vomitting from an overtight band....you know...a living hell!! But the doctors kept telling me it was me!

Im really afraid of having the bypass because it's a so permanent. Im terrified! !

Do you regret it at all and can you eat normal foods yet?

I do not have any regrets. I feel great and have from the beginning. I was walking the halls of the hospital the next day and walking on the beach just a couple of days later. I have fought my weight my entire life and for once I'm losing at a constant rate. I eat everything, just not a lot. I try to get in a good amount of Protein, but other than that I eat what I want. I was tracking my food, but just stopped because I don't want to spend the rest of my life thinking about food. I'm am trying now to listen to my body and feed it what it needs. :)

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum. I was approved for revision from band to rny about a month ago, still have about month til my surgery on May 6th. I'm very excited to get this band out, I have had nothing but problems with it. I never lost a good amount of weight with it and have been in discomfort for 5 yrs now. I do have a lot of worries that I will fail at this wls also and I'm very embarrassed that I haven't been successful at it. It does make me feel so much better reading everyone else's struggles with it and to know I'm not the only one out there. I would love to know if any of you are having your surgery around the time I am.

I am in the process of waiting for approval for revision. Congrats on getting it done first of all. Second l, don't compare the band to GB. There is a huge difference and be positive. You got this!! I am hoping for a May revision as well. I have had a lot of problems with the band too but did have 163 pound weight loss until my problems started now I have gained 35 pounds. So depressing. Keep me posted on your journey. You are going to be successful.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
