The second most painful experience of my life..omg...this was bad

Recommended Posts

I have A LOT if kidney stones. She. They first occurred about 4 years ago, I had a 20mm and 9mm stone on the left and a 10mm and 9mm on my right. They had to do something because you can only pass a 5mm-6mm on your own. (Have they said the approx size?) For mine to grow that large, they had been there probably 2 years but didn't cause pain until they moved. I had 3 rounds of lithotripsy (both kidneys at same time) and bi-lateral ureter scents for 3 weeks. The agents were awful. I have passed many other since then. Mine always come at the worst times - and in fact day after I got home from my RNY, I passed a quite large one. From your description, it sounds like it may be on the way out. The lithotripsy was actually quite easy. Go to sleep, wake up 30 minutes later. Back was a little sore but not too bad. Ice or heat worked for me some. Hot bath helped a lot (especially with the stents).

I have a crazy remedy for you that actually worked on me a few times. My Dr threw it out as sort of a fluke but I tried it and sped up the process of passing it. It is to drink about 8 oz of Fluid then bend over a couch or something with your head facing down (ie your kidneys are pointing downwards) and then pound on your back in the kidney area. You can't do it for too long. I try to pound about 50 times (I use a sock with tennis balls in it) and then staying leaning over, take a break. I know it sounds crazy but the movement does seem to move the stone along. Take ur pain med first (preferably with food so you don't get sick) and then after 30 or so minutes drink the Water. Waiting 30 minutes after drinking is to give time for Fluid to get to your kidneys. The pain will likely come and go but if it continues at the pain level you are at, you may want to go ahead and do the lithotripsy. I've had it done 4 times now. Too many times can damage your kidney but so can a stuck stone. Walking helps move the stone too supposedly as I would imagine rid g a horse would do the same - jostling the stone around.

So sorry you are going thru with this. I know it is no fun! Oh and yes my stomach does get messed up when I am going to pass one. It is sometimes one of my clues one is coming.

If I can help answer any questions, don't hesitate to PM me.

@@CowgirlJane,

Good luck with it. I have heard how painful kidney stones can be, and they sound awful. I really hope you can get it taken care of soon and figure out how you prevent more in the future!

Thanks for that crazy tip. I may try it. Anybody who thinks horseback riding would help has no idea of the pain I am in. :(

I had a bit of a pain crisis this afternoon. The percaset helped, but never resolved it and within an hour, I was back to alot of pain. By alot I mean doubled over, crying and oddly needing to pee about every 3-5 minutes. Getting up and moving around made it hurt worse.

I am also supposed to take an An NSAID which of bariatric doc does NOT want me to take,so I limit it. I take a PPI, wait 30 minutes, eat then take the NSAID. trouble is, today I couldn't eat. So by afternoon I was feeling distress..panting hard. I know that kind of breathing is from pain and not a closed airway but my son was freaking out and wanting to go to emergency. So, I took one small bite of bread (all I could stand) and downed the liquid IB. My stomach burned like crazy but within minutes I could feel some relief. Once the pain reduced, my breathing slowed back down and I ate a whole piece of toast. I am far from cured but pain went from almost unbearable... 7-8? to uncomfortable. So, the lesson here is that at least in my case, inflammation is a big issue. I saw it on the scans too - doctor could see the gas, and swelling.

Ok, so I am taking IB regularly now and will call tomorrow about this procedure. I can't stand this pain and life disruption and I want to get off the NSAID as soon as possible.

Mine is a single that measures 4 - said 80percent chance I don't need the treatment based on size.

This is absolutely insane, I knew it was painful, but this is way worse than I ever fathomed. Wow.

If you are having to pee that often, then you are probably very close to passing it. If you start to get spasms in your bladder or even urethra, don't panic. Your body is trying to break the stone in smaller pieces to pass easier. Hopefully it wil be over soon!

@@CowgirlJane - I ditto that - How are you this morning???

Hubby has had two of them. He was told to add lemonade to his diet to help fight the Calcium that help to make his stones. He did a medically supervised diet Calcium free diet to see if they were being created by the diet (eating). Turns out the parathyroid glands above his kidneys were overproducing the calcium. His "diet" had no effect. He was directed to get a endocrinologist on board and since he has seen him the stones have stopped producing. The endo monitors his calcium levels and keeps him on a Water pill as well. He has had 2 and he said NO MORE!

On the topic of diet, do you drink a lot of sports drinks? A friend of mine had kidney stones 3 times in 18 months. They finally narrowed it down to all the Powerade and Gatorade he was drinking at work. He switched to plain Water and hasn't had a stone in over 2 years.

Hope you're feeling better.....

I am ok this morning, pain very manageable but not over yet. I don't drink sports drinks but I do sometimes use mio and other Water enhancers. Who knows..once they are able to do an analysis of the type, prevention plan will be clearer. I told doc I do eat high protein/moderate carbs - but that is just one of a laundry list of possible causes.

Anyway, I just need to get through this workweek....

If you can try to find out what type of kidney stone it is for better preventative treatment. I had a 7mm stone and had a lithotripsy but the surgeon (from Overlake in Bellevue) didn't send the fragments to the lab for analysis.

@@j16 your profile avatar is scary..just saying!

Oh no, Dr Deck (evergreen) really wants me to capture that thing so it can go to the lab. If that is not possible, he says they can do other tests, but reading the offending stone is best. Normally, I would be a little hesitant of a doc who wants to do so many tests and follow ups, but good heavens this has been terrible. I want to do anything I can to prevent re occurance.

I have mixed feelings about Evergreen ER - between my son and I we have been regulars lately - but I do like the docs associated with Evergreen.

I am of course in pain, my poor young adult sons have felt traumatized by their normally tough momma crying from pain not to mention the other unpleasantness.

My friends are starting to wonder if they will ever have their social director/partner in crime back! (I have been pretty limited since late January due to surgical complications - just returning to normal when this hit). I got a sad text from a girlfriend, she'd gone on a work related fancy evening out and I had gone on a short date on Saturday night....normally the kind of night when we'd both be like "all dressed up,the old folks have gone to bed, lets go find some live music and dancing"...but no, I am in bed by like 930!! Nice to feel kinda loved.... it is true that big deal stuff ripples to people who care about you... and people who rely on you for fun!

Not to mention, I found someone who is thrilled to teach me and my peeps how to gamble. If i ever go to Vegas it would be nice to have a clue. Heck, I can't even figure out the horse racing betting - there are like too many choices! That was supposed to happen Sunday, at my house...food, beverages and laughs and a bucket of pennies in the line. ..of course cancelled.

Sigh. Oh well, I am happy that I have so much fun stuff to look forward to when I recover. That, and having a flat tummy again.

This has become a VERY educational thread for me.

I've never had a kidney stone. But never say never. ;)

I had no idea there were different kinds of stones, different causes, etc.

It isnt the size..it's more the Hitchcock like creepiness. .. ha!.

Everything I know about cars is from some POS that I owned that broke down...this like this for me too. No idea at all about this strange condition, never fathomed it would ever be relevant to me.

Ok, horses get these HUGE rocks that form inside them that can cause blockage. I saw one once, from a necroprocy - it was like a good 6-8"....surreal. it makes me wonder about the sense behind it. I mean like why our bodies do this stuff. Makes me grateful for living in a time with such good medical care too. "Good Ole days" - ha, give me novacaine, antibiotics and pain killers over nostalgia any day. I really wonder how people coped with this sort of thing 100 - 10,000 years ago.

Sure hope this all ends for you soon. I'm curious: if this is the second most painful experience....what was the first?

I am constantly questioning the sense behind why things happen and how. I am so grateful for living in a time that isn't the "good ole days". My list actually starts with air conditioning with #2 being painkillers.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
