Still struggling but hanging in there.

Recommended Posts

So I was reading a post of mine from a few months back. Generally the post was about my ongoing battle with depression and body image problems. Unfortunately I'm still going through these issues, and they were there long before my surgery, therefore they're not going anywhere unless I take action.

Moving on from that, I've noticed that I have refrained from being active. This not only helped me physically, but mentally as well. I've just long interest in so many things that made me happy like exercise, getting my nails done, and other personal grooming/me time. Don't get me wrong I still partake in other "me time" rituals. But the most important ones have stopped.

It's a little disappointing to say that I'm almost two years post-op, maintaining my weight, but really depressed. I suppose this is common for many of us as we no longer have the satisfaction of watching the scale drop. We are then left to face real life and the real world. On top of that I'm at a complicated stage in life as it is. I'm a senior in college, and will be graduating in 7months. I have massive anxiety about the future and my career. Overall I just miss feeling happy, I miss that high I once had when I first had my surgery. I'm determined to find it again though.

I apologize for jumping into the twenties forum, but I just wanted to extend my support.

Congratulations on all of your accomplishments: surgery, weight loss, and making it this far toward your degree.

The time right before graduation is going to be exciting, challenging, scary, stressful, etc. Any major life change good or bad can be extremely stressful.

Since you recognize that some of your challenges stem from depression, body image, etc. may I suggest you do make an appointment to talk with someone at your college counseling center. They can be a great resource for students and can also refer you to community resources when appropriate.

I also recommend you make an appointment with a career counselor. Many colleges have excellent career resources to help you with your transition through graduation: whether you are looking for a job or plan to continue your studies.

In addition, you may find a bariatric or recovery support group (like OA) helpful.

If you know you feel better when you exercise but aren't doing so, try making a date with a friend or two to go for a walk, or do something fun like roller skating.

Best of luck and keep us posted on how you are doing.

Well keep hanging in there. Were rooting for you. During my short life (of 67 years), I have found that adventure is a powerful force. It stays with you your entire life. So plan an adventure.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
