I am 61 yrs. old and had my surgery Aug 30th. I'm 6 mos. out. I was nervous also, almost to tears but yet so excited. They prepped me for surgery and off I went. Woke up, no pain at all, dues to meds, no nausea and luckily no gas pain. I actually felt pretty good and I had a higher BMI than anyone has mentioned. I had to lose 100 lbs. before they would operate. I loved my Doctor and he made it so easy, oh there were bad days, hungry all day but when I did pre op shakes I had no trouble. Premier Protein got me through, also, my iced tea Decaf. I was very fortunate I never had pain. Got home and worried about the sipping also, but my husband got me into the habit which they started at the hospital and it was ok. You sound ready to me and are just having normal feelings I had before I went in. You are already doing it. Be proud of yourself.

I drank and still do Premier Protein 30 gr. Protein. Tastes very good and you can get it at Sam's. My taste did change. Before surgery I loved chewing ice constantly now not so much. Love vegetable blends, now don't really care for them. Didn't really care for pork chops before surgery now I really like them. It's kind of weird. Little things I always liked now not so much. But then foods I never ate and refused to like Greek Yogurt by Yoplait, I eat like crazy now, only 100 cal and it tastes great. Good for a fill in between meals. I only love the Peach. But in the end it is all worth it. You can do it.....I did and I had a lot of weight on me even after losing 100lbs. before surgery. I have now lost an additional 85 - 100. You can do it.

Thank you so much for the encouragement and congrats on All your success!! I also heard that a lot of people crave spicy foods after. Have you had moments of stall? If so how did you get the weight coming off again? Do you eat healthy low calorie low carb meals now?

I do in a little way like spicy foods where I didn't so much before. But I stay away from the really hot & spicy for fear of really bad heartburn. I haven't had any before and i don't want to start now. I did stall, and in fact I am in one now. I have stayed the same for almost 6 weeks but am fitting into smaller clothes so 'm guessing am losing inches?

When I stall I go to a few more shakes a day and increase my veggie intake. I try to stay around 1200 cal. a day. I seem to do very well around that. So, now being stalled I have cut back some to hopefully shock my system. Not easy I do get hungry. But that is when I head for the yogurt, almonds, a few wheat thins, piece or two of Kraft 2% cheese, not individually wrapped, can't stand that stuff it tastes like rubber. I also only eat rye or wheat bread. I won't lie there are some tough days, but you make it through. Or you cheat a little and then go through a huge guilt trip, at least I do and I get mad at myself for doing it. No one is perfect, but you can and will do it.

I live in Texas. I only did 7 day pre op and it was 2 Protein Shakes then a lean cuisine for supper. I think it helped me get mentally ready for my lifestyle change. Good Luck on your surgery day!

My doctor only requires me to do a pre-op diet the day before the surgery :) I did go to the store today and got my broth, sugar free popsicles, and sugar free Jello. I'm really excited to have my surgery. Where do you girls live? Anyone from SoCal?

I had to do a 2 week pre-op diet and I must admit to this group that today I did cheat. I was 222 today I'm at 214 with 5 days to go. I had a stressful day today and I just wanted a good meal. Tomorrow I am back strict! For me I never learned how to be ok with a nice meal and now feel like I need to blow the whole day or even weekend. I was on ideal Protein for about 6 months before and I got down to 140 but I would have days where I would go off the diet and eat EVERYTHING I wanted then the next day I would feel so down at what I had done. I pray now that I can be ok with a nice meal and then get back on track!

I did 2 week pre op diet and did it with Premier shakes. I was surprised at how easy it was for me. I was determined to go to surgery. I was lucky, the shakes held me. I was to drink 5-6 a day. I still drink at least one a day with my up cal in it Sometimes I drink more if I get really hungry. Very happy with my results.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
