I had my gastric bypass in December and I am very close to your stats. A lot of people are totally shocked that I qualified for the surgery, but being short... Well you don't need to be that heavy to get your BMI to 40. Even though I was "only" 233 pounds at my highest and 227 at surgery, I still got winded going up stairs, had joint and knee pain, and was constantly fatigued... I totally hear you when it comes to wanting to be skinny!! It's all I thought about before surgery and it wasn't just to look better, it was to feel better!! Best of luck to you! It's going to feel awesome! I've lost 36 pounds so far and the difference is incredible!

I am thrilled for you! Your BMI is clearly morbidly obese which will in fact lead to serious health issues down the road. Trust me I waited way to long tried way too many diets that ultimately allowed me to lose, gain it all back and then some.

RNY is an excellent tool to help you meet your goals whether they are to get healthy or get skinny. It is the gold standard in WLS and getting to a normal BMI from where you are can be challenging.

I did it to get healthy and after a very short span of time getting skinny became more important than I though it would be. And yes, I recently had a clothes moment when I went to buy new jeans. I was wearing 12s, and thought I needed to move to a 10. Well, the 10s were too big so I put on a pair of 8s which fit perfect! The clerk suggested I try on a 6 in another color because that color was more forgiving. Guess what? I got the 6 on, got them zipped and everything!

I will say, you need to be realistic though. You will likely have a lot of loose skin to deal although you are younger and some may bounce back better than someone my age.

The best of luck to you!

Those were all of my selfish reasons for wanting the surgery but I had major health problems that finally pushed me to get it. I love being able to buy cute clothes and get cute bathing suits. I feel so healthy more than I feel skinny. I have more energy and it has been great for my libido. Husband is thrilled (sorry TMI ;)

Oh yeah I've been having those moments! Most recently I've been loving my workout clothes. I never could have worn this stuff 70 pounds ago! I also just bought some leggings and am thinking of shopping for knee-high boots. I measured my calf circumference and I'm either ready or very close to ready for regular, not wide calf, boots. Exciting stuff!

Thanks gang, this thread is so inspiring!!

So of course I dream/long to perhaps stop taking Metformin, Losarten, Glypizide, Amlodipine, Statins, tons of advil etc blah, blah.. we'll see! The side benny has been this fun clothing thing, but like I think I mentioned, NO NEW CLOTHES until August. That will be 6 months post-op and I can see where this ends up weight-wise....

Friends, I'm gonna get real here; aside from the health problems addressed above, this is what I'm talking about:

I haven't tucked a shirt in for YEARS!!

I haven't gone swimming in many years unless I was alone,,,...

Haven't taken a shirt off in public in decades

Stopped dancing years ago, hurt too much

Having to stop at the top of one flight of stairs to catch my breath

Wait till lights are off to get in bed with my partner.

Being 2 weeks out, I wouldnt recommend bypass unless you have co morbidities. Sorry, just saying.

And it sounds to me like you're more focused on being skinny & that's dangerous. As others have mentioned, this surgery isn't easy. I'm not trying to be harsh, but I feel like I need to be honest. All the best with whatever you decide.

I'm 5'2 went into surgery at 223 pounds. I'm like 7 weeks out and I'm 193#. I had gastric bypass, and I'm very excited to be skinny too. Lol. I don't have any co-morbitites either, and I got the surgery to

#1 lose weight

#2 Stay healthy

My luck wouldn't stay good for long at my old weight, it was a matter of time before something happened. So, to all the nay-sayers...I wish I would have done the surgery sooner. Not bouncing up and down in weight from diet to diet. If it was cancer, and not being overweight, nobody would say anything about taking preventative measures... Good luck!!

@@antionettemn619y1 Glad you are so excited as the road to surgery can be a rollercoaster of a ride. At least it was for me. In the beginning I was so excited and as the 6 months of pre-work up was going on I questioned if I was doing the right thing. At 5' 2" and 260 lbs. I was deemed "Class III Morbidly Obese" by my Bariatric team at mayo. Reading those words was very difficult but so was my reality. I went into my RNY surgery as well educated as one could possibly be and I'm so glad I did. It was the BEST decision I've ever made. The key word being decision "I" ever made because at the end of the day, it's your body and you will be the only one who determines your success :) Fitting into smaller and definitely cuter clothes is wonderful. That being said, I'm 54 years young and my short lil body has been stretched out for 25+ years. Needless to say, my skin did not snap back - LOL! I'm in a size 6 pants now (down from a 26/28) but could probably fit in a size 4 if not for all the loose belly skin (yuck). I have loose arm and leg skin as well (which I can hide in clothing) but to be honest with you, I'm really OK with it. Why? Because I have my HEALTH back. That's what's going to keep me alive! Best of luck on your journey as I'm sure you'll be another success story!!!

I have to tell you, you look absolutely fantastic! I am around the same that you started (5'2" and about 268 lbs) and I love to see people my age (oh, I'm 53) who lost this weight and look fabulous. I'm afraid of my face looking really old when I lose the weight because of the "double chin" I have right now. Also, I would never know you have hanging skin by looking at your picture. So attractive!

I'd like to say I got the surgery which partly was the reason, but I was tired of going out with friends and being the big girl and felt like I was sticking out. Or going shopping with friends and never being able to buy things because of my size. Some of my health issues have gotten better, but my arthritis in my back has gotten worse (go figure).

I did have that moment at JCrew when trying on some spring clothes. I'd always loved their clothes but could never wear them and now I can! It's exciting.

I have a BMI of 34 when I started and my insurance covered it by going the hiatal hernia route. Yes I feel the same way ! I just started my journey in last month. I'm not 5 days post op and 7lbs down since surgery, and 30lbs down since my starting weight in January! I can't wait to look in the mirror and like what I see :) im with you hum <3

I actually have some money stashed away for my cute new wardrobe I'm gonna have :D

I am waiting for surgery date. I finally made the decision to go this route in September and I am now excited. I need knee replacements and major reason for WLS is for health and to be pain free. I love to cook and can't wait to work over recipes to make them healthy. Looking forward to gardening and growing fresh herbs and vegetables pain free. So much is for health for me .....looking better will be a great second. I'm 54 and looking forward to a new lease on life.

Looking to live life again

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
