Recommended Posts

I love green and fruit juices. I make them at home, so they don't have any sugar.

how soon did u begin drinking homemade fruit juices after your bypass?

My nut told me not to even try it yet, especially fruit juices, because they are super good for you but also contain a huge amount of sugar and are almost guaranteed to make you dump. My six month check up is in 4 days and I'm betting when I talk to her then she will say it's okay to try it, but keeping the amount of fruit greatly reduced is going to be something all surgery patients must do. Can you ask your nutritionist about it?

No fruit juices whatsoever ever in my diet. My nut would prefer I actually eat a piece of fruit which delivers the Fiber as well. The amount of sugar in fruit juices is significant.

The only time I had any fruit juice was week 1 post op they had me mix unsweetened apple juice with Water. 1/3 apple juice to 2/3 Water. As soon as I moved on to full liquids they had me remove all fruit juices completely and as I said told me to eat fruit rather than drink the juice.

Same here guys. My clinic and surgery team go bonkers and really hammer away about the natural, and the hidden sugar in fruit/foods. As was mentioned above, eating the actual fruit-minus the peels and seeds if possible-was highly encouraged for all the Fiber.< /p>

However, they give you a formula of all the carbs, Protein, and quite a long list of what you need per day to be a healthy post Bariatric person. It's strict, but I know it's for my best interest.

That's a shame, my fruit smoothies had an amazing effect on my skin, hair and overall health. They use to help me get rid of colds without medication.

It's a real shame that I have to cut them out of my life.

What about the naked juices? Has anyone tried those? Did they cause dumping?

I've cut way back on fruit juices since surgery given the amount of sugar in them ( and I was a lifelong orange and grapefruit juice guy). However, I will still have an occasional fruit/vegetable smoothie because I miss the taste ( and it hasn't stopped my weight loss). These days I focus on adding the real fruit, using a reduced sugar OJ or V8 juice and supplementing it with some coconut Water and Protein Powder. Enjoy your fruit, it's good for you, but do so in moderation.

@@ProudMomof2 the naked juices are even worse because they have all that sugar plus added sugar and usually other additives as well. Same with Bolthouse drinks, which were a favorite of mine before surgery and are now off limits.

If anyone is still reading/posting here, I'm curious about citrus fruit in general. I know I'm not so poised to eat the pith or any of the membranes. Just wondering how you all are able to slice/peel and eat those delicious fruits?? I'm just nervous I might ingest something and ill. In a big citrus eater. I love lemons and limes, too????

I occasionaly will have a few orange segments. They don't bother me at all.

The peels from an apple or pear don't work for me but everything else is fine.

Hi folks, I hope I don't offend anyone here, but when I keep reading people saying they're a "big juice person or a big Bolt drinker" etc, I realize they're probably just mourning the passing of their old ways (that in part got us into this position!) and I get that, but sometimes it sounds like it hasn't sunk in that we have to meet this surgery half way, that is, by this time to be well aware that what we use to eat or enjoy must be completely revised and changed. I don't know, just some of the comments here occasionally make me worry for my compatriots here. Let's do this, Folks!

I mean, from all those dieting days I had become aware that though "healthier" - that drinking juice was like drinking liquid sugar. Those days are over unless we want to slowly drift back to where we are pre-surgery. It's interesting that given the tiny sample of people I personally know, that I know TWO who had bariatric surgery and are now morbidly obese again. THAT gets my attention

juice isn't magic. You can get the same results from drinking enough Fluid, eating clean and healthy food, taking your Vitamins and supplements, and exercising.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
