Help! I had my sleeve on January 11,2016 and I am 3 and a half weeks Post op.

This is not a race and you simply can't compare your situation to anyone else's. In the initial four to six weeks after surgery, your body has one goal: to heal. You had major abdominal surgery. Your body isn't about to let go of what it needs to repair and heal from surgery. Most people do have an initial loss of 10-15 lbs. and then stall for a week or so. It's just your body trying to catch it's breath.

Don't fret. Put the scale away. Follow the postop diet instructions you were given. Drink your Water, Hit your Protein goals. Move your body. Rest when you need it. Everything starts with this.

Good luck!

I was just like you, actually freaking out that the weight loss was so slow. Now 6 months out I am down 78lbs, hard to believe, and sometimes I still think I am a little behind. patience is the key, and I have never been known to have any, but with this you have no choice. Protein goals for the day are key and exercising helps too. Good luck, and have patience.

Comparing yourself to others is a recipe for frustration and disappointment. This is a marathon, not a sprint. I "only" lost 14 pounds my first month and "only" 8 pounds the next month, and "only" 6 pounds a month for a while after that, and eventually "only" 2 pounds a month. You know where all those "only"s got me? To my goal weight where I've been maintaining for over 5 months.

I have only lost 10lbs and I'm super upset and disappointed !

I know others that have lost 25 lbs by now????

I had my surgery Jan 9 and have "only" lost 12 lbs since surgery. 11 of them were by Jan 20. Today I was down another pound. On Jan 21 the scale actually started creeping up slowly so I put the scale away.

I plan to weigh once a week now. And if on my weigh in day I'm feeling bloated or not great, I'll skip my weigh in. Not worth the frustration!

Although stalls are completely normal, maybe post what you're eating and some of the vets around here may have some advice or ideas for you!

I had to give up Mio. Although I was getting more than the required Water in with it, I was getting bloated off the stuff. Not that it has helped break the stall on the scale, I feel much better.

SusanFrye Hello, I just found this app and I relate to your frustration. I had my sleeve done on January 5th and I was weighing 183lb and I'm 4'9" so I'm pretty obese. Last time I weigh myself was exactly four weeks from my surgery weighing 168.4. "Only" 14.6 lbs down. I feel so sad so I'm also looking for support. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm walking a lot and staying very active at home with chores. I go back to work on Monday and back to my normal routine which I'm scared to. I need to fit in working out but I don't know where to start. Please help.

@@lopeg748 I hope you read my post above. I started at a higher weight than you and only lost 14.8 pounds my first month. I still got to goal and I'm now maintaining. You aren't doing anything wrong. Some people just lose slower than others. Doesn't mean you won't still get where you're going.

You lost almost 10% of your total weight in a few weeks. Most people (men are the annoying exception) don't drop 30-50lbs in the first month. They drop 10-20, then keep dropping steadily each month with lots of stalls in between. The idea is to keep losing over several months and it all ads up, 10lbs a month in a 6 months time is 60lbs.

I had my surgery on 1/11/16. I was 208 the day of surgery and hit 193 on 1/25. My weight hasn't budged since then. I think 15 lbs. In 3 weeks is a pretty decent loss. You are doing great. Heal up and we will see our fat melt off soon. :)

My doctor told me I wasn't eating enough calories to lose and that my body is in starvation mode and hanging on to everything. I get 300-500 calories a day. I've tried really hard to eat more this week to see if it sets me back in the right direction. My new goal is 800 calories for now.

Hey Jamie,

Wondering since you lost weight at a steady & slowish pace if you avoided any hair loss?

Thanks,

J

I only had a little Hair loss at about 3.5 months out to about 5 months out and it began regrowing immediately. The hair loss itself wasn't visibly noticeable, but all the little baby hairs sticking up all over the place as they grew in was a little funny looking.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
