I am 13 years post op RNY and have 60 pounds of regain, have taken steroids twice for broken bones and a stressful life in general caused me to go back bad habits, I need advice as to where to start to lose this before I regain it all.

I think going back to your (or a) surgeon to see what options exist as well as going back to the NUT.

Get back to basics!

Keep that food journal. Document everything you eat, no matter how embarrassing. Track how much Protein you are eating and make sure to keep it between 70-100 grams of protein/day.

Eat Protein first, then veg, then the other stuff if you have to.

Cut back or eliminate bread/grains/carbs

Drink all your Water.

Stop drinking anything 30 minutes before your meal.

Don't drink anything with your meal

Wait 30 minutes after your meal to drink again.

Exercise!

Really chew your food, eat slowly and mindfully.

Or, do the 5-day pouch test to kick it off: http://www.5daypouchtest.com/index.html

Best of luck!

Keep it simple. Implement one post op rule at a time and build. Put out more than you take in. That's my goal every day. I'm only 5 months out and have lost 100+ pounds but I have slow or no go weeks and have to give this advice to myself to get the ball rolling again.

Btw, congrats on your weight loss and you inspire me to keep working because here you are years later and you're still fighting the good fight! You're awesome! Don't ever forget everything you've already accomplished! You've already proven to yourself that you can do it. You've done it. You can do it again. :)

xoxo

If it were me I would literally go back to the basics, start following all the rules that you know work.

Protein - 1 gram for every inch you are tall

Water - 48 to 64 oz per day

Vitamins - whatever your doc prescribed for you

No drinking 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after

Exercise - start by walking 30 minutes per day

Stop eating all processed foods, sugar, Pasta, rice, bread. Start eating good dense Protein, good fats and great vegetables and small amounts of fruit.< /p>

Reset yourself. If you go back to the basics the weight will start coming off again.

My most helpful tool is logging my food so I know exactly where I am with all my nutrients. Yes, I even log the bad stuff so I hold myself accountable but more so because it helps me make better choices if I stray.

For example, I plan to have delicious Balestreries pizza tonight for dinner. It is a thin crispy crust pizza and it is delicious. Knowing that will put some bad fat and carbs in for the day and not enough protein, I plan my Breakfast and lunch to balance and ensure I get proper protein and keep the bad carbs to a minimum.

I will have a Protein shake for Breakfast as I always do, for lunch I will have some left over baked chicken breast and cucumber salad. I will likely not need a snack today.

I had a RNY in 2002 & I lost 132 pounds and now I've also regained about 70. I went to a different surgeon as my original has since retired. He gave me a barium swallow right in his office and it was determined that my pouch was fine but the opening at the bottom of my stomach wasn't small anymore. He did a revision surgery on me yesterday cinching that opening back down to 1 cm. not sure if any of that helps you but I thought I would share so you'd know you aren't alone.

Regain freaks me out especially when I hit that stall. But, I've always been told to "get back to basics."

@@MxKitty Did you have to be in the hospital, just like the original surgery? Or is it something they can just do as an out-patient and you go home right away? Please tell us more about that cinching surgery!!

Esskay-It was totally done outpatient. Dr Snow went in endoscopic so down my throat while I was in lala land. Surgery was at 9:30 and I was discharged and headed home by 1pm. I would have been let go earlier but it takes me longer than most to come out of anesthesia.

The surgery was Tuesday the 9th so there's not much to tell yet other than I was on Clear liquids for a week prior and now on Clear Liquids until Saturday. I can progress to full liquids on Sunday.

My throat is very raw and sore but nothing like the pain from my original open RNY. They sent me home with hyrocodo liquid and I've only taken it on the first day after I got home.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
