Laziness even after weightloss

Recommended Posts

I've lost 40 pounds so far in the past 2 months. Why am I so lazy I'm really fighting to walk. I thought weight-loss would bring energy & vigor

You can be slim and not fit. I would also say that my personal experience is I felt pretty crappy about the first 10-12 weeks too - you might be dehydrated, lots of factors.

The way you get fitter is by doing... just start easy and slowly build up.

I went from a very obese woman to someone who is pretty fit for middle age, but it was a process, not an event. Hang in there, you will feel better!

Finding motivation to be active is interesting. Here are a few things to try

music was a great way to distract and pump you up while walking, cleaning house or working out...Holy hell!!! sing loud in your car. It raises your heart beat.

Virtual weight loss simulator. See what the possibilities are. Remind your self you will only get out of your surgery what you are willing to put into it.

My favorite is after joining the gym. I secretly compete with people. If I can stay on the treadmill and walk longer than the person next to me..... I WIN!

Fitness web sites: Find what things to keep you active that you might enjoy...Kayaking, Join a group hike, mountain biking, Sports....Find what is fun and go with it.

I actually used model my diet for the before and after goal model of myself before surgery and hung it on my refrigerator. It's very motivating.

It took me 6 months before I really got an exercise routine down. I was just plain exhausted and could barely complete a slow half mile walk up until then.

I'm doing super now at a year out, and it really didn't make too big a difference to me that I didn't get going until the 6 month mark; I'm walking/jogging 3+ miles a day most days, doing yoga twice a week, and biking and swimming (in the summer).

The real key for me was to find things I enjoyed that didn't feel like a chore. I knew I'd never do it if I didn't feel at least a little happy doing it. My walking is because I have a super trail near my house around a bayou with lots of pretty birds, turtles and other wildlife - I enjoy walking because it's so pretty and the trail is well laid out. Didn't really like it that much before.

Ease into it. You'll start feeling better the more you can up your calories and the more you try to exercise.

I know a lot of exercise enthusiasts argue that you don't need any fancy gadgets to work out, but I find that my Jawbone UP2 fitness tracker is really motivating! It's a lot of fun to see your steps and have duels with people. I hate working out, mainly because it's painful at my size, but having the activity tracker makes it a little more fun, and you see instant results with it. Not weight loss, but at least you can really see what you've just accomplished! There are tons of options out there, check them out!

I like my fitbit for the same reason! I'm more motivated to move because I'm in competitions with friends!

I was super motivated while I was losing weight, then I had a year of plastics where I forced myself to powerwalk everyday since I couldn't run because I was terrified of gaining weight, then I gained a little a few months ago and ran everyday for a month, and then the last month I haven't done jack. I feel like my desire to exercise is directly related to the scale- if I gain weight, my butt goes running until I'm back to normal. If I am maintaining, oh give me the TV and my couch all day.

@@Teaclinton, "lazy" is a matter of old habits and/or emotional/psychological state, not weight.

I just found and lightly skimmed the first screen of the link. It may be useful.

http://theorganicsister.com/overcoming-laziness/

If the suggestions that the others are giving make a difference, great. If you still have a hard time making the changes you'd like, maybe some short-term therapy, probably CBT? Do whatever it takes to get you where you want to go.

P.S. How could I have forgotten? Click this and then click the link you find there.

What was your exercise routine pre-surgery? What was your energy level then?

I am in the same boat. I don't like to exercise and I find any excuse not to. Once I get started, I do tend to enjoy it (for a while.) Tomorrow morning I am going with my sister to a boxing class. I keep being told I can go at my own pass. We will see how that goes! I hope I love it and want to join the gym BUT doesn't seem likely. :D

There are lots of days I don't feel like walking. My dog however doesn't care how I feel, so I walk. I adopted a dog partially for this purpose and it is working out perfectly.

I think building being active into your live works a lot better than "working out".

If there is a fleet feet store or other running store they often have training programs. Fleet feet has an intro to 5k program called No Boundaries that is tailored to intro people into running. I've done it and really enjoyed it. It helped me to have a group to train with and a coach to guide us and keep us motivated. https://www.fleetfeetsports.com/training-programs/beginners

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
