I am not excessively large, but have apnea and asthma so i keep on a roller coaster. I am planning on having the sleeve done in January if insurance approves... keep feeling like i am taking a short cut.... for those of you who have done this... would you recommend it? would you do it again?

You are still in the obese category with your BMI of 37. Plus your co-morbidities would imply that the sleeve may be good for you. I had a great experience and the sleeve saved my life, as far as I'm concerned. I would do it again in a heart beat.

@dbatche I do recommend the sleeve ... for a host of reasons ... health being the main one ... not vanity ( though that doesn't hurt :) )

Being that you have health issues already ... the surgery will help you ... That is just my two cents ... Though your surgeon should be the one you turn to first ...

And would I do it again?! HECK YES !!!

I waited for years YEARS before I finally did it ... Now as I look back ... I WASTED those years "thinking" about it ... worrying about paying for it ... could I do it ... etc .... Don't waste the time ...

HAVE the surgery ...

you will be SOOO happy you did :)

Yes, I recommend it.

Yes, I would do it all over again. My comorbidities are lessened or completely gone, my self-esteem is very good, I feel great, I have had more NSVs then I can shake a stick at, I am adding years to my life, etc., etc.

My only regret was not having a VSG sooner.

Make the best educated decision on the procedure that is correct for you.

Research as much as you can, attend a WLS seminar, WLS support groups and have your PCP, surgeon and any specialists you may be seeing all on board.

Definitely one of the best decisions I have ever made. I cannot say enough about how much it has changed all aspects of my life, not just numbers on the scale. I am happier, healthier, and more confident than I have ever been! There was definitely some "buyer's remorse" in the very beginning and some struggles and frustrations in the early months. But once I was fully adapted to my new life and new way of eating, it has been completely amazing. Definitely worth that little bit of suffering for a few months to be able to enjoy the whole rest of my life!

@@dbatche I completely understand where you are coming from. For years, I resisted bariatric surgery because I figured that since I was going to have to follow a diet after the surgery, why not just follow the diet in the first place and skip the surgery? Over the last 12 years: I lost 75 lbs, gained it back; lost 125 pounds, gained it back; lost 220 pounds, gained it back. In the end, I decided that I needed help to both lose the weight and make the lifestyle changes necessary to keep it off and be healthier. I am now 6 weeks post-op and could not be happier with my choice. It is already completely worth it, and I have a long way to go.

I was also a low BMI and I also felt like I was cheating and taking a shortcut. To be honest with you, I have been at goal since April and I can say that yes, having a sleeve, is a great big cheaterhead decision and one that I am very happy I made. Before the sleeve I could diet down to about 140 and then back up to about 200 and I did that 4-5 times. Finally I ended up being like 210 and I just kept gaining. Because of the sleeve I cannot eat more than I should, which is a huge benefit over someone who has a full stomach. Statistically when you are overweight the chance of losing weight and keeping it off long term is very low. Even when you've had bariatric surgery, long term maintenance is not easy. It is simply a tool and for me, yes I could have starved myself back down to probably around 150, but I could never maintain where I'm at now (129-132) without feeling completely miserable. My sleeve has saved me and I love her. :)

Surgery is Feb 10th! pre-op liquid diet has me down 15 pounds in a week. I am cranky according to my husband! not hungry though!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
