Soooo strep throat, antibiotics and one not careful night = pregnant 6 months post surgery. I have lost 61% of my excess weight already. I'm worried since they told me miscarriage risk is high since I am not far enough out from surgery. Anyone else in my shoes or been here? How did it go? I have 2 kids currently so no trouble in the past. I need encouragement!

Oh no! I'm on antibiotics right now (UTI) and you can bet that I am SUPER DUPER strict about the back-up birth control!

6 months is a good way out. I've seen some stories on here about people getting pregnant weeks after surgery. Obviously, the best thing to do is talk to your surgeon, OB-GYN, and nutritionist to make sure you are doing everything you need to care for yourself and the baby. I have read in previous posts here that the general rule of thumb is to prioritize the pregnancy over the surgery. So take prenatal Vitamins instead of your bariatric vitamins, etc. But the important thing right this second is not to panic and to make sure you are getting proper medical advice from the fully informed professionals.

You can safely continue to lose weight while pregnant, you just need to make sure all your nutritional needs are being met. This is not an impossible situation!

Nrg33... you & I are in the same shoes!! Oy ve'...this was not as I had planned it, but it is what it is. I'm still in shock yet somewhat happy. I found out on Christmas and then after 3 home tests decided to go into Planned Parenthood and get tested again. Yep. I'm pregnant.

I called my Bariatric team this morning (which is 2 hours away) and was told I would get a phone call back. A nurse calls me back within in the hour and tells me to take Prenatal Vitamins and continue taking my Calcium citrate, B-12, & Prilosec. I asked her what about follow up with them and she said normal scheduled follow ups. That's it.

Two thoughts run through my head after this conversation...

A. Am I being shunned or punished because I accidentally got pregnant 7 months past my surgery

B. Is this how they treat all pregnancies... and if so WTF?!?

Today I've been hunting for a mid wife but I think I might need to seek a Doc under these special circumstances.

I'm in the same boat... got pregnant 6 or 7 months post-op... an unexpected but welcomed surprise.

I took four pregnancy test today and they all came back positive. I am excited and scared at the same time since I am considered a high risk patient. All my pregnancy were high risk. So I guess it's time to look for a doc that specializes in this case.

I just found out I'm pregnant also 8 months out from surgery. I'm concerned about nutrition for the baby and really not worried about loosing more weight right now.

How is everyone doing? I am worried because I am 21 weeks prego and have only gained 2 lbs and am struggling to gain more. Eating makes me nauseous. I was told by my surgeon to see a high risk OB and I did and she cleared me to stay with the midwives that deliver at my other 2 kids! So I'm very happy about that!

No, you aren't being shunned or punished - pregnancy is your OB-GYN's expertise, not your surgeon's. They are simply deferring to the advice from the doctor and team who are treating your major issue now, which is the pregnancy. They'd do the same if you had a cardiac issue, for example.

Edited to add - I know this is an older post, but in case anybody else worried about this.

My sister got pregnant about 4 months after surgery. She is now 7 months and her and the baby are fine and she's only gained 2 pounds so far.

I just found this group.. I am currently almost 5 mths post surgery and 20 weeks pregnant.. conception date was 2 weeks post op.. please let me know if you do start a FB group as most people don't understand what we are going through.. so far baby and I are doing wonderfully just had my anatomy ultrasound yesterday and all looks perfect

I am 4 months post opp and would love to start trying to get pregnant, but of course they told me to weight 12-18 months.

I'm really interested to know how things go for earlier pregnancies. Is nutrition their main concern and can this be addressed with supplements? If this is the only reason then maybe we should start trying hahaha!!

Hi Sarah, welcome!

While I definitely wish my timing had been better, I am doing fabulous with my pregnancy. Currently 26 weeks pregnant and 6 mths post op. Baby and I so far have been doing great, but now is the time theyear will really start to monitor her as this is the time for her to start putting on weight.

My only concern is that I have stretched my sleeve out trying to make sure I get enough in for baby to thrive. I am curious as to what my life will look like post baby since I never really had a chance to get used to my sleeve and break the bad habits that got me to surgery in the first place.

You can't always address the nutritional deficiencies with supplements. Pregnancy that soon post-op isn't something you should try - I assume it was unplanned for those that did get pregnant. It is often a high risk pregnancy and stressful. The baby is at risk from nutritional deficiencies - as is the mother. Why take a chance?

@@sarah7 I agree with @@KristenLe why take the chance? If it can pose ANY extra risk to yourself or the baby, why not just wait. I understand that people who accidentally get pregnant have to try to make the most of their situation, but I would certainly advise against putting yourself in that situation intentionally. This is the time for you to be focusing on YOURSELF, establishing new, healthy habits, and learning how to work with your new tool. Don't get ahead of yourself and jeopardize this opportunity.

Babies will always get their nutrition, they will leech it from your body. You don't eat and have good nutrition for the baby, you do it so you stay strong and the baby doesn't leech it from your bones and the rest of your body. You risk mainly your health in this situation. You need a lot of strength and stamina to deal with newborns, infants and toddlers.

Wait until you are fully healed. I am almost a year out and the way I feel, how much I can eat, and my energy at 11 months compared to 4 months is massive.
