keep sipping your liquids and walk as much as you can. I am sure they sent you home with instructions (and hopefully pain meds) By day 3 I was off my pain meds and walking every hour or two for 5 minutes. They gave me little medicine cups that held 1 oz fluids and I believe I drank 5 or 6 of them an hour. On day 2 it was just broth or Water - day three they added 1 oz Protein per hour - then I progressed from there. If you were not given instructions call your office or NUT. Seems like I had 3 or 4 people give me materials (NUT, pre-op class, discharge nurse, and the nurse from my doctor's office) -

Congrats on your surgery - the first week or so is rough because of the gas pains and not being able to get in much Protein and Water. You just have to keep working at it slowly and know that everything will work out.

Yes, my surgeon only discharged me from the hospital when I showed him I was able to drink 1 oz every 15 mins. The goal is to have 4 oz every hour, which would total 48 oz of you're up for 12 hours.

I literally sipped all day long. I used a timer to help remind me. Also walk in your home. It helps with the gas pain.

I also ate Jello and broth. I mainly drank. I also had to drink 2 oz of Protein shake 3x a day in the first couple of days. I believe I ended the week with 4 oz 3x a day of Protein shakes. These all count as liquids. But as you know you have to get your fluids in. I've had to get fluids twice because I was mildly dehydrated.

Are you taking your pain meds? This really helped me get by the first few days.

@@christinamejia I just had surgery on Monday 12/14 and I'm feeling tons of pain. My incisions have bruised very badly and my entire abdomen is killing me. I truly feel like half of my pain is probably from gas and for the first two days I couldn't breathe fully and standing up was very hard. Walking has helped tons. I wasn't expecting this level of pain.

I know the pain is crazy right?!! I thought I tore something or moved wrong. But today is day 5 and I'm feeling way better. Did you have the RNY?

I had surgery on 11/6. Trust me it gets better. I was very miserable for the first week. It gradually gets better. Just take small sips and don't obsess about the Protein. I know it's hard not to. But just remember it's all about allowing your body to heal right now. Congrats!!

@@christinamejia Yes I did have the RNY, it is getting better slow but sure. In those first few days it was so bad I couldn't stop thinking something must be wrong. I couldn't imagine the pain and now I know it was mostly from gas, now that the gas is gone It's so much better. ZERO hunger as well, I just can't get over that part, I love it :P

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
