Lots of lbs flying off, is this much normal?

Recommended Posts

I just got the operation November 16. I'm already down 25 pounds.

I am doing everything that is required, lots of liquids and waiting every ounce of food. I'll tell you one thing, I can't wait to start puréed foods! It's going to feel great! I just started exercising at the gym yesterday, as well. I'm feeling really good!

I believe it is normal. I started my pre-op diet on 10/14 and had surgery on 11/2 and I am down 52 pounds already.

Do keep in mind that everybody responds differently, but your rate sounds normal but on the high end.

Everyone loses differently. That said, I lost 85lbs in the first 90 days. I just recently experienced a full 3 week stall, not a pound was lost, even after working out harder, drinking more fluids and carefully watching my intake. My body just had to readjust. I just noticed 2 pounds gone this morning. You will lose it fast, but do not worry or fret when it stalls. It will stall, you will want to do more to get it going again, but you have to let it run its course. I stopped worrying about it and it did start falling off again. Your loss is fast, but it may be that way for you. Best of luck!

I lost 136 lbs in less than 6 months. However, that period of fast loss does not last forever. Eventually you will hit stalls and then simply stop losing weight altogether. At that point you will have to increase your physical activity and exercise to lose weight.

My surgery date was 11/19/15. I lost 25 lbs in the 2 months leading up to surgery, gained 7 lbs post operatively and now down a total of 30 lbs but only really 5 post surgery. Even the doctor seemed to think my initial loss was low and said it should pick up. Today I tried my first pureed foods and wanted to die. I know I'm glad I did it but I also know myself, and I need to see results. Happy for your quick results though.

I'm 10 days post op and have literally lost a pound a day since surgery!

I had lost I had lost 23 lbs pre op.

You will hit a stall soon. And that's normal, so don't fret. Your body is adjusting after the large loss.

After that, your weight loss will stabilize to more "normal" rates of loss....2-5 pounds per week. The closer you get to goal, the more the weight loss slows down. You will probably have several stalls along the way.

We all wish we could lose at those rates we do at first, but that wouldn't be exactly healthy, would it? :P

Thank you for the imput, it makes me realize I'm in the norm. I'm in the purée stage now, and find I'm earring more than I want. I've really got to watch it!

I sure do appreciate everyone and your replies. Thanks again!

It's not the norm for everyone. Not me anyway. I don't know if it's because I had been dieting prior to surgery or what. I lost 30 pounds before. Only 12 at my 3 week weigh-in after surgery. I feel like a failure.

People who lose fast, like some of you folks are losing, usually are heavyweights to begin with, men (with more muscle tissue), and younger people (who may be more active and have a higher metabolism).

I certainly didn't lose fast. I just ran all my monthly weight loss numbers, and they look like this:

Pre-op loss:

In 2.5 months - lost 20 pounds

Post-op losses:

Months 1-4 - averaged 10.5 pounds/month

Months 5-8 - averaged 5.6 pounds/month

Months 9-12 - averaged 2.2 pounds/month

Months 13-16 - averaged 1.5 pounds/month

Today marks 2 months since I started my pre-op diet. I'm down 58 pounds so far.

It's been one month today tomorrow. I stalled after two weeks, then picked back up again. I sure do appreciate the helpful comments. I'm 54 years old, if that makes a difference to anyone. Now I am at 30 pounds. On solid foods finally!

So is it all worth it in your opinion? It seems like no one really regrets doing it even if they have complications.

I think there are very few who ultimately, seriously regret it. I was fortunate enough to not have any negative effects so its easy for me to say it is beyond worth it. I think that we tend to focus on the things that could happen, as if it was maybe easier to talk ourselves out of the surgery if it sounds like there is too much of a risk. Not saying people don't have bad experiences, it is certainly possible, but I think the positive experiences far outweigh the bad. The thing with the bad experiences is that you hear them very loud, very frequently. You hear positive stories too, but how many people who had a wonderful experience don't go online and tell their story? They might not even give it another thought and continue on. so you may only be hearing a lot of the bad stuff. Either way, most only regret waiting so long.

@@psychprof ...

I can't think of a single thing about the sleeve to regret.

Not a single, little bitty thing.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
