Quest Bar

Recommended Posts

This Quest bar just saved my life. Omg why haven't I have one before now? Going back today and getting more. Net carbs is what we look at right?

Yes, the net carbs is what you count for nutrition purposes. The net carb count is what impacts your blood sugar.

There is no "we" when it comes to post-wls surgery eating plans, unless you are talking to someone with the same surgery, same surgeon, and same dietitian as yours. My dietitian says net carbs are a lie that people tell themselves in order to feel better about eating crap. But what does yours say?

I'm really curious as to what your nutritionists justification for that statement is. Net carbs is literally total carbs less Fiber, and I can't think of much "crap" that is super fiber packed to throw off the carb count.

Most people also subtract sugar alcohols and that's a bit more questionable. Quest bars do have sugar alcohols and the net carbs they advertise subtracts those.

It will ask them and see what they say. I would hope that they all say the same thing or at least similar. I've heard it a few times that net carbs is the number you go by but you are the first to say otherwise.

I thought Quest bars are the best out there for Protein bars!

most of them taste pretty good, they have high Protein and high fiber, what's not to like about that? And low sugar. So I'm confused now, they aren't good bars then??

I bought a few of the Quest chips and I'd do the bars any day of the week over the chips!

Oh don't get me wrong, I think quest bars ROCK and use them 4-5 days a week. I'm just weighing in on the net carbs controversy. I don't mind their carb count because of the fiber and I also am not concerned about artificial sweeteners, but some people are.

It's just important to know and make a conscious choice!! I think real whole food is better and eat that as much as possible, but I am not averse to processed food in my diet.

I don't really overly concern myself with carbs. As long as the source of the carbs is good ( as in not processed or overly refined foods), I don't worry. I tend to stick to all natural bars like KIND , Larabar and Cliff bars. It hasn't negatively effected my weight loss in the least.

Quest bars have high Protein, low sugar . I have eaten them since I had my surgery almost 3 years ago. They are way better for me and my band than any of the other Protein Bars because the amount of sugar in some of them is very high. Sugar=carbs and makes me want to eat more sugar.

I love Quest bars and I eat one every day. I count the net carbs and the nutritionist agreed on handling it this way. It's on my program's list of approved Protein Bars. I've been eating them for over four months now. I had surgery six and 1/2 months ago and I have never had a stall, not even the dreaded 3 week stall. I think I'm like the tortoise and not the hare - slow and steady is my race.

I can't wait to get some different flavors. Good to mix them up in guess. It was like eating a real candy bar after the cardboard I've been eating

Mark,

I agree. Quest bars are excellent tasting. The Fiber amount in them are substantial.

I find them to be an excellent addition to the menu. I have one every two or three days when something sweet just seems good.

The extra fiber is certainly welcome with a low carb diet, for sure. I look at the labels of the various flavors and select ones with less sugar alcohol. I understand there is now a pumpkin flavored version, too. Cool stuff.

I was in Academy Sports today with my son and we found them for sale in there over by the weight lifting gear. Super cool.

I seem to go to Academy on a weekly basis anyway....now I'll grab them as I do. They had over a dozen varieties.

the Quest bars are too expensive for me, over $2 a bar. I do like the ones that you can buy on this website

my favorites were the strawberry cheesecake and the Peanut Butter and jelly ones.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
