Waiting for approval!

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys! I am so happy and relieved!!

I have my fingers crossed for all of you! You've been so sweet and supportive; I hope we can go through the process together!

My doctor's office called me yesterday but I didn't hear the message until last night. (I've called and bugged them so many times, I'm sure they were just as relieved as I was!! lol)

I have an appointment on 8/14 with the OR nurse to go over details and requirements for surgery. Then 8/21 at the hospital for pre-surgery testing. Then a final physical and clearance from my PCP on 8/22.

They even scheduled my first follow-up appointment for 9/10.

I'm approved!!! I am so happy. I called the insurance company this morning and they said that I was approved !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you all so much for holding my hand during this waiting period. No doubt your thoughts and prayers worked.

I guess we will be banded around the same time so it would be great to be able to keep in touch on progress.

hugs and kisses

This is a great thread for those of us all waiting! I just joined LBT today, and this place is exactly what I needed. I've decided not to tell anyone my decision (when I mentioned it to my brother as a possibility months ago, he freaked out.)

I started this process in April, and the wait has been a killer, but I just submitted everything to my insurance company. Keep on prayin...

Hi BluesByrd- I started the process also in April and I understand that the waiting game is a little frustrating. Did you go through all of the tests and everything?

I AM SOOOOOOOOOOOOO PISSED!!!!:angry:angry:angry:angry. I went to Dr. Spiegel's office on July 7th for my consultation and to submitt my paperwork with United Healthcare. I chose to go to him because he has performed over 6000 surgeries, despite some of the rumors that I have heard about him and his office. After going to the seminar, I was impressed with him and felt good about my decision to go there. I called a week later to see if they were needing any additional information from me such as previous doctors records and to see if they had heard anything, and I was told by my RUDE case worker Lulu that and I quote "I don't know the status of your case for I just submitted the information on July 12th and do not have time to stay on the phone and call the insurance companies for every patient that we have. But feel free to call UHC everyday if you would like!!!" I wanted in my heart to believe that she was just having a bad day............boy was I wrong! I decided to call my insurance co a week later on July 18th to check the status and was happy to find out that I HAD BEEN APPROVED!!! So I called Lulu to tell her so we could set up a surgery date and was told that they had to have a copy of the approval letter BEFORE they would schedule the appt.:faint:I was fine with that. So I waited and checked the mail every day and finally it came in on July 25th. I emailed the approval letter to her on July 26th and she forwarded it to Pam at their Houston office to schedule the surgery. Pam finally called me back at 1:00pm that day to schedule the appt. Great right??? WRONG!! It was then that I had learned that my information that had been sent to UHC to be approved had requested that the surgery be done at University General Hospital (a new hospital in Houston which Spiegel had raved about during his seminar) which was OUT OF NETWORK for me!!! They never asked me where I wanted the surgery to be done!!! I assumed that they would set it up with 12 Oaks which is the only In Network Hospital that he goes to!!! I was told to redo it so I could go to 12 Oaks that all of my paperwork would have to be resubmitted to UHC and could not tell me how long it would take!!! I AM SOOOO MAD!!! I call UHC to verify this and Pam was correct!!! I have left multiple voice mails for Pam to call me because I have questions and I have yet to hear from her. So I have decided that I am going to make me an appt with another doctor closer to home being that I live in Lake Charles. I just wanted to let anyone considering Spiegel to know what they would be getting themselves into before they wasted their time!!!If this is the way they are treating me know, how would they react if something were really wrong with me after I had the surgery. That is the question I asked myself and I figure that if I am going to have to wait for another approval that I will go to someone else.

Sorry so long just needed to vent!!!

Oh Princesst that really stinks!! I understand you wanting to switch Dr. now but will that mean you have to do the tests and everything all over again? Call around and check with another Dr.s office.

Unfortunately that no matter how good the Dr. is doesnt matter when you have to deal with his staff for scheduling and everything else.

My thoughts and prayers are with you I hope everything works out for you. Keep us posted.

Well Valzie, I've done everything the Dr.'s office told me to do at this point, so I hope that's it. Didn't need additional tests that he said...

Val,

Thanks for the support!! Fortunately there are no test to redo! I look at it this way-I have waited this long.........I can wait a little longer to know that I am going to be cared for AFTER my surgery. Getting the lapband is only the first step in the right direction. The aftercare of the lapband is what continues the weightloss-that is why for me it is important that I know that I will have nurses and office staff that will work with me-NOT AGAINST!!!

Princesst - Wow!! That really really sucks!

I know all of the waiting is frustrating and how angry you must be right now but I'm going to attempt to put a positive spin on this ...

Maybe this happened for a reason? We've all been working so hard just to get the surgery day, that it feels like that's the finish line. It's really just the first step. You're going to need A LOT of after care, just think of the fills and possible un-fills alone. And god forbid you have any complications or need to switch insurance companies …

It doesn't matter if your doctor is the best surgeon in all of TX if his support staff sucks. It's better to find out now. After the surgeon inserts the band, I bet close to 80% of your after care is done by his support staff.

I fell in love with everyone in my surgeon's office. I'd say they played just as much a role in me choosing my doctor, as his reputation and experience did. They are all so caring, helpful, and patient. I've probably annoyed the crap out of all of them already and not once did I experience the negativity it sounds like you've been experiencing all along. Do you really want to go through it every time you need help or have a follow up visit? In the first few months when we’re all being hypochondriacs and calling them for every little thing, do you really want some bitchy nurse making you feel like you are wasting her time? Or worse … not even calling you back?

Houston is a very metropolitan and HUGE area - you should have no problem finding another suitable doctor in your network. I wouldn't imagine you'd have to do all your pre-op tests again - the results won't be any different. I assume you did them all with specialists, not your surgeon's office anyway.

Make some calls - talk to a few people on here. Seems like we have a lot of people in TX.

Best of luck - keep us updated.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
