Hi! I'm not far away (too far). I'm in Gainesville, VA, about an hour away via back roads through Quantico marine base. My tentative surgery date is 12/28/15 at Fair Oaks, which has a comprehensive center of excellence for bariatric surgery...I'm so excited! So you want bypass? I chose it vs a sleeve.

I just had my sleeve done at fair oaks on Tuesday October 27th

I was in hospital 2 days as I had s couple of medical issues that needed to be monitored but home now and feeling much better on day 3 post op

One note, I was suprised and somewhat disappointed that my room was in the med-surg unit and got the small side of a shared room

No window, no recliner to sit in

I was under the impression that I would be in a unit/room especially for bariatric patients

Also although my nurses were good they were not bariatric specialist

Just some questions you nU want to ask before your surgery date

I know they do have private rooms with recliners and larger beds but I guess I wasn't big enough to get one

That's s first!

Hi Tish, Diamond and Molto. I understand that I will have to have my surgery at Holy Cross in Silver Spring. However I am only going for my first appointment after my referral on Monday. I am really excited. I can't wait to kick start my before! I am happy we connected.

That's too bad. I too thought they had a Bariatric wing but it was not. It was not busy at all when I was there. I had my surgery the 21st. I did have a private room and for the most part my nurses and techs were great. They also seemed very familiar with Bariatric patients. They all seemed very concerned with the level of care.

I have seen several people post about Holy Cross and have had good experiences.

Darn! I really thought Fair Oaks had a bariatric unit too? Not sure why I thought that. I had a spinal fusion (neck) there and got a private room. Hubby slept in the recliner for 3 days (and nights) til I was released...bless him! I hope and pray for a private room again!!

Llamalover, do let us know how your appt goes!!

I am a member of a WLS support group in Fredericksburg. It was started through "Meetup" and we meet the first Monday of each month at the University of Mary Washington. We have been meeting for 2 months and it has been very helpful. I just started my pre-op diet and am scheduled for surgery Feb 8th!

I'm in Stafford! My surgery is scheduled for 2/17. I'm at Fair Oaks too - and really really hoping for a private room, yikes! I don't think I've ever shared a hospital room.

Hi, I just had surgery Monday and I got at private room. There seems to be a lot of them, but the minute I got there to register I would ask who ever I was talking to "are you the one I should talk to about getting a private room." Finally their was a nurse that said "I'll put it on a yellow sticky and stick it on your chart that you are requesting a private room." And I got one! I found everyone there very kind and helpful. One young women names Liz who was from Russia was really sweet. I was doing so good I only stayed one night which I wanted. My husband spent the night too and he got no sleep and of course I didn't sleep much either so home was the place for us if I was fit to go. And I was! Good luck on the 17th let me know if there are any other questions you have. I know what your feeling right now, hang in there :)

Thank you for checking in! Yes! I requested one during the pre-op work and was told "we'll see...I don't know how many they have..." but you were right that there seemed to be a ton! I only saw one or two shared rooms and they were so small...I would have lost my mind!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
