Any bad experiences ? by not taking vitamins/protein drink

Well... I am nearly 4 years post op and to make my Protein goals I generally have a Premier Protein daily. I use it in my coffee...sip on it during the day etc.

I am half my former size and believe that a low carb high quality Protein Drink helps me maintain. Protein Bars...another very high carb story. ..

I don't know what part of the world you're in, but, regardless, surely you had classes in biology and health along the way. Without nutrients, that is, Vitamins and minerals, Protein, a person dies. Or something else. Just as one, tiny example, Vitamin A deficiency results in irreversible blindness. If you wish to search for pictures, you'll see why that particular little problem is irreversible. Be warned, however, that the pictures are unimaginable and heartbreaking. Vitamin A deficiency blindness is primarily a third-world phenomenon, places where Unicef and other international agencies provide medical care for children and adults. Being in a developed country does not in and of itself give immunity.

People who've been sleeved eat so little that, if they depend on their food and drink alone, they will suffer greatly. The need for nutrients applies to everyone, not only WLS people.

Find a way not to forget the Vitamins. Keep them on the kitchen counter, a spot on the counter that you use often. Generally it's best to take them with food, meaning within half an hour. If you take any medications for medical reasons, some should not be taken close to taking vitamins. Check with your nutritionist and/or pharmacist on that.

Update. I am going bald. hair is literally breaking off. Take your Vitamins

@@bellabloom what helped my hair so much was I added liquid silica to my flavored water. I also started adding a powdered marine collagen to my Water. My was so dry, thin, brittle. It was like straw. After adding those two supplements my hair is now a little thicker. The dry brittleness is going away and it's actual shiny again.

When I was researching VSG I looked into long term effects of gastrectomy patients who had part or all of their stomachs removed due to cancer or ulcers because VSG just hasn't been around long enough to have good studies showing long term effects.

90% of gastrectomy patients developed nutritional deficiencies within 10 years. Vitamin D, B12, Iron, Calcium, zinc and folate were the biggest culprits. Vitamin B12 deficiency can result in PERMANANT neuropathic so, leaving you crippled for life. The illnesses and symptoms of other deficiencies are really too long to list.

These deficiencies Are not going to pop up overnight. They are a result of chronic malnourishment and very easily prevented by simply taking your supplements. Annual bloodwork is also extremely important in order to monitor and adjust your vitamin regimen. You went through the trouble of surgery.....taking Vitamins and eating Protein is SO easy!

And here's some personal bad experiences.....I have two married friends that had WLS 8 years ago. They have never taken the recommended supplements. They had no problems for the first 4 years, other than one of them tended to get dehydrated a couple times/year. She has been hospitalized more than once in the last 3 years due to anemia (low iron), weakness and heart arrhythmia (low potassium) and fatigue and anemia from low B12. He almost bled to death after passing out on the bathroom floor because he had a severe Vitamin K deficiency and his blood wouldn't clot. After that he finally decided to get "with the program" and is doing well but she refuses to comply and continues to feel like crap and has numerous symptoms related to various deficiencies. She's thin but is more unhealthy than she ever was when she was fat.

I researched the patch Vitamins and apparently they don't work very well. I have some pretty serious deficiencies going on now so I can't afford to screw around.

I have a very hard time swallowing pills and taking Vitamins by mouth, they make me very nauseated and I already have a hard time eating enough so I don't need that.

The best I can do is gummy vitamins. I found one with most of what I need and am concentrating on nutrient dense food in my diet like kale, spinach, broccoli, etc to get as much as I can that way.

Vitamins are an absolute must!!

Yes! My thiamine levels were deathly low! It's a must we take these vitamins!

You're not the only one. I've struggled with vitamins due to nausea and vomiting that usually follows, or the occasional Migraine. I'm trying to find what works best to tolerate them, but it's difficult. I'm just hoping that the Hair loss slows down soon.

Any particular multivitamin we should take? I was given a lot of information but not a lot of detailed information about how many milligrams of different Vitamins I should take. I only know that I should make my way to 60 Protein. But what about the other Vitamins and minerals how much of each?

I was given a list of required vitamins and supplements (with a suggested schedule) from my surgeon.

As far as the multivitamin, I just take a regular multivitamin with Iron (Centrum or a generic version similar to Centrum so far).

If you are unclear about requirements why not give your NUT or surgeon's office a call?

      Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

        As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

        Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

      Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
