This is a question, and i'm not even sure i'm posting it in the correct place, so if I am I apologize in advance. I had the sleeve on 9/23. I haven't had any issues up until this last week. I'm completely exhausted, I'm having a hard time getting my Protein and fluids in, I constantly have the shakes (which I think might be the protein issue), I have a sore place just under my right breast, and I feel nauseated ALL the time. I'm also incredibly irritable and emotional. I feel like i'm going crazy!!! Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone give some advice on how to manage all of this? My weight also keeps fluctuating, I keep trying to tell myself not to think too much into it but it's so hard when you've come through so much to lose this weight.

I definitely had the moody and irritable stage! I think there are quite a few here who can relate to that too.

Are you still taking your acid medication first thing in the morning, 30 minutes before you eat?

Keep pushing forward. Your sleeve will take time to get used to a new life. Getting your Protein and Water intake in is what you are working on at this point. Its a bit difficult at first. It will get better.

Based on my personal experience and what I have read on the boards:

-exhaustion and feeling like crap is a bit normal, but I betcha you are dehydrated. If you can't get fluids in, ask your surgeon if you can get IV fluids. You don't need to go to the hospital for that.

-emotional - probably due to all of this, and the hormones released due to rapid weight loss. It will get better, but this is a tough time

-the pain under your right breast - i think you should call your surgeon's office about this one. PRobably nothing, but better safe than sorry.

Hang in there.

@@_Kate_ do you mean the carafate? I was told to take it until it was gone, this past Tuesday was the last day for me. It definitely makes me feel better to know i'm not the only one that had mood changes. It makes you question your sanity, that's for sure.

@jenn1- Thank you for that :) I'm trying to push the Protein and fluids as much as I can.

Thank you as well Jane, and i'm sure you are right about the dehydration. I'm definitely going to give my surgeon a call and see what we can do.

Everything you are feeling is normal. I will say that I started to feel better only after I was able to get my Water and Protein up to an acceptable level which took about a month for me.

If you are finding it hard to tolerate your shakes, try switching to another type. I personally like Premier Protein ready made shakes. In the beginning I would thin them out with a little fair life milk or skim milk.

These shakes have 30 grams of Protein in each one, they make it much easier to get to your goals.

Are you taking Prilosec or Nexium or something like it? You may need an acid blocker.

I have had the pain under my right breast and believe it was gas as Gas-X took the pain away. Try some gas-X strips or chewables if you haven't. The emotions are totally normal at this stage. It WILL get better. You just have to get thru the first few weeks as best you can and stay hydrates

Yes carafate is an anti ulcer/acid medication. Lots of Drs prescribe it for up to 3 months after surgery. You can get Prilosec or Nexium and their generics without a prescription. I took it regularly for two months and found I was much more comfy even though I didn't have reflex or anything. It might help you feel more able to eat and get more Fluid down.At first I could not just drink a shake or anything for that matter. I just kept sipping away for hours. BY the time the first shake was gone it was time to make another one. However that slow constant intake did make me feel much better and gave me some energy.

Many people are emotional after surgery. The anesthetic affects some and as someone else said rapid weight loss releases hormones.

I agree about asking your Dr about the pain under your breast. I get pain under my left breast but sometime later I always burp so for me gas must get trapped somewhere till I move or digest what I have eaten.

It will get better just give it time. Hang in there.

Normal, normal, normal. Touch base with your doctor regarding pain. Sip Water anytime you aren't sipping Protein. suck on ice chips if necessary. You may need another or stronger dosage of PPI (carafate, omeprazole, etc....) Walk as much as you can.

Stay off the scale if it makes you crazy.

I'm sorry all of this is going on :(

This is a long shot - but do you still have your gallbladder? I was nauseated and got the shakes when I had a gallbladder attack but the pain was more in my back and not under my breast. I had gallstones which were clogging up the works and making me feel so lousy. I hope you find an answer soon!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
