I haven't decided on with surgery to have yet and I'm sure all WLS can cause it due to speedy weigh loss but I was wondering if 100% of patients has this problem? Would you mind sharing your starting weight height and age? I realize this is personal but I know these must have alot to do with how much loose skin you will have. Thanks:)

I haven't had the surgery yet but every youtube journey I have watched and every blog I read, they have loose skin. Some have more than others but I think it's inevitable. The more weight you have, the more skin needed to be stretched. I was concerned about it in the beginning but I figured if I'm healthier and smaller, saggy skin doesn't seem so bad.

. I agree healthy and being smaller trumps loss skin. I'm just concerned that I'll be just as self conscious about it as I am about being over weight. Just trying to work out all the negatives in my head now so I'll be mentally prepared when the time comes

I am 20 years old I had the gastric sleeve procedure done. My starting weight pre op before the liquid diet was 396. After the 2 week liquid diet/day before surgery I weighed in at 382. I am 5 days post op and my moms scale says 376 ( I'm not sure if this weight is accurate , her scale is always off ) but I will know for sure on Monday my next doctors appointment.

Not looking forward to my floppy arms being even floppier when I'm thinner. But I AM looking forward to being thinner! From what I read exercise DOES help with the firming of the skin. I'll be pumping some serious iron!

. That's what I was thinking too! I'm looking forward to exercise when I'm 100 pds less. It's got to be easier. I'm just saying lol

This is just my opinion, but I think there might be something to how long you have been overweight. I have been big since I was about 5 years old. I'm going to be 50 in November. Many years of stretched skin, even after losing 82 lbs, in 3.5 months. My body is showing some serious loose skin already. Arms, inner thighs, belly are the worst. I'm about 15 lbs from my halfway mark. I know I am going to have some serious loose skin, to deal with. YIKES!

I have a feeling those who are younger, and have not been overweight for long, could probably have enough elasticity in their skin that it won't be too bad.

This is just my opinion, but I think there might be something to how long you have been overweight. I have been big since I was about 5 years old. I'm going to be 50 in November. Many years of stretched skin, even after losing 82 lbs, in 3.5 months. My body is showing some serious loose skin already. Arms, inner thighs, belly are the worst. I'm about 15 lbs from my halfway mark. I know I am going to have some serious loose skin, to deal with. YIKES!

. That's what I was thinking also. I have been over weight since I was 8. I'm 30 now but I've only been morbidly obese for I'd say 3 years so I'm hoping maybe that will make a difference. Good luck with the rest of your journey!

The loose skin will be affected by several things - most important is what you can't control...genetics.

But exercise does firm the muscle supporting the skin and does provide some better contour. Give your skin Protein, Water, stay out of hot tubs, take cooler showers and less sun damage are your best tools to optimize what you have. But at some point you might have to look at plastics. But it's worth it to be finally able to lead the life I want.

29 years old. 5'7. Highest weight was 290. Currently 169 so I've lost 121 pounds total. Here's my loose skin.

I think it will make a difference, but as @OKCPirate said, there is that factor of genetics. I didn't think about that. Very good point!

I have pretty good skin on my face, I rarely go into the sun, and moisturize moisturize moisturize! But basically, 45 years of stretched skin everywhere else, has me looking like the saggy baggy elephant already. LOL Hey, at least I can laugh at it. I've been morbidly obese at least since high school. I graduated 30 years... a longgggg time ago in a galaxy far far away. That's a lot of years of stretching.

Loose skin depends on age, how long you've been overweight, your skin type/genetics, a good dollop of good or bad luck, and of course for women, skin becomes even less forgiving after menopause. And contrary to what so many people will try to tell you, loose skin is NOT a problem tied only to the rapid weight loss that happens after bariatric surgery. I lost 26kg (about 58 lb) a few years back the "old fashioned" way over a longer time frame and definitely got a bit droopy!

It's all really just the luck of the draw, but I'd rather be a few sizes smaller than my skin, than unhealthy.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
