How much protein & cals

Recommended Posts

I am 5 weeks out & my NUT says Protein should be 50-60 G protein daily..... I see others do more.... So I get confused. Is more better? I hear you can get more Constipation & already get that now! How much protein were you consuming at 5 weeks & calories? I also hear differences between caloric intake at this point. How many calories at 5 weeks did you or are you consuming?

Common rule of thumb is minimum of 60grams of Protein. However Protein helps you lose. Things like hair and nails suffer with rapid weight loss as the body leeches all of it when you are losing. Many choose to up their protein to combat that. I personally strive for 100gms a day. I work out 5 - 6 days a week. I find I have more energy when I maintain a higher protein level. I've also read that many programs are changing their protocols and recommending higher protein intake levels.

If you have a good nutritionist or medical person at your program, I would recommend calling and speaking with them about what will be the best option for you.

Hello @@Lexuskela - I'm almost three weeks out from having my RNY on August 17th. I, too, strive for 100g of Protein a day. My current daily food intake gives me around 100g of Protein and between 600 and 650 calories, usually. Today I got 790 cals in because I had an extra cup of milk to finish off my protein requirement for the day. From what I understand, your caloric intake is not a huge deal until you hit maintenance stage. For now, it's really important to get in at least 64 oz of Water, your nutritionist's recommended protein, and your vitamins/supplements. Here's a screenshot of my usual intake. The "lunch" category is pureed and spread out in 1/2 cup increments throughout the day: http://imgur.com/kDzaLIo

I was given a sort of "as needed" medication for Constipation, but I rarely need to use it. Ask your nutritionist about it, and perhaps she can give you suggestions if you're having issues. Hope this helps! Feel free to message me anytime. ^_^

Hmmm it's always amazing to me how wildly different all our programs are, and what the requirements are.

At 3.5 months out, I'm to get 60g of Protein in me a day, and 900 Calories.

I can't even imagine getting 100 in! I'd die. I'm stuffed to the gills already, and food holds no interest for me. I don't even have hunger. That's why it's so hard for me to get my requirements met.

At my 3 month follow up, they put me back on Protein shakes. I'm nowhere near getting in 900 calories a day.

I'm losing, I believe at a good pace. Considering that I basically get no exercise to really speak of. Knee replacement on the way, as soon as I get my BMI down to 40. I may get a walk or two per week on my treadmill, if my knee isn't giving me too much trouble. I can't wait until I can properly exercise. I'm using the stability ball and resistance bands to do something...anything, until I can really walk! :)

I just had a follow up appointment with a dietician at 5 months out. She said they recommend at least 65 grams of Protein right out of the gate and about 65 grams carbs maximum per day. This will help with energy, weight loss and decrease hair loss if you're going to have it. She said not to be concerned with calories, I assume keeping my Protein up and carbs down will keep my calories relatively low.

I had been having issues with Constipation even though I was moving my bowels daily and was in terrible pain. I take 2 stool softeners every morning, Benefiber twice a day and 3 prunes at night. Those were a few of the things my surgeon recommended and I tweaked them until I found what worked. And of course at least 64 ounces of Water every day!

Just a reminder that programs vary as to protocols and nutrition plans take into consideration many variables such as height, sex, age, starting weight and health status.

My program does worry about carbs as long as they are good complex carbs, but does caution against refined carbs.

Don't worry about hitting 100gms of Protein right out the gate. You have to work up to it. At 3 mths I was probably getting 60 - 75gms of Protein.< /p>

I have been hitting 100g of Protein a day since about week 4 however I do still have 2 Protein drinks a day which I mix with Water not milk. Cottage cheese, high Protein low fat greek yogurt, chicken, eggs, fish etc all add up nicely.

At week 6 I am on 4 meals and 2 Protein Drinks a day. Works for me :D

Added: about 500-600 calories a day although I am trying to up that and 72 oz Water a day.

I had sleeve done, I know some said RNY has any had sleeve? I did my MFP last night & I had 575 cals & 79 g of Protein ..... My NUT at my 1 month check up said 50-60 g of protein daily, 48-64 oz of Fluid a day

Have you considered Water exercise? I have a bad knee and walking is difficult. If it wasn't for the pool I wouldn't be able to get much exercise either.

at my first nut meating i was told for the first 7 weeks after surgery i would be on 3 Protein Shakes a day on top of my regular meals to meet my 60-80 grams of Protein requirements i had a list of like 10 protein supplements i can choose from all of which i can get on Amazon so yay me but yeah its not uncommon at 3 months out to still be on shakes. i was told for the rest of eternity that my goal for protein after surgery would be 60-80 grams a day

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
