I am about 2 months pre-op and was expecting to have the sleeve from day one. Just learned after a Ph monometry that I will need the RNY due to reflux. I am very nervous about this WLS. Does anyone have regrets about the procedure and the drastic changes to eating?

Somebody just posted this same thing yesterday. Go take a look and you will see that nobody has regretted it at all, except may regret that they didn't do it sooner!!!!

I was so against it for so long. Not that I thought it was the easy way out, not really sure why now. My brother in law had gastric bypass and I just rolled my eyes and thought "let's see how long before he gains it back." (Yes, that was horrible of me!!!!! I so regret that).

I was completely against it. But then my sister had decided to get it and sibling rivalry kicked in. There was no way I was going to let her do this and lose all this weight and leave me behind! lol It's actually not that simple--we had a lot of conversations about it but that is what it boiled down to. So we both took the plunge and had the surgery.

I was scared for sure and not sure I was doing the right thing. Even by a week AFTER the surgery, I was still wondering what the hell I just did! But then the weight started coming off and I haven't looked back. I am so happy I did this.

I haven't lost as much as I would like but I have my life back. I can move, I can cross my legs, I can bend down to put on my shoes, I no longer fear getting on a plane and wondering if I will need an extension for the seat belt. And I am now shopping in the normal size stores and departments!

You will freak out, you will get scared but then it will go away. Enjoy the rollercoaster of emotions!

@@Jasley,

Good morning! I was in the same boat as you are. I had my heart set on the sleeve after going through the classes and doing some on line research.

When I saw the bariatrician she recommended that I do not go with the sleeve but the RNY because I suffered from reflux. I was devastated. Mostly because like you I was afraid of bypass. She asked me what about bypass was I concerned about. I told her I thought bypass was more radical, the malabsorption as well as dumping syndrome.

She spent a lot of time with me. First, bypass is no more radical that removing 85 percent of your stomach. With bypass you could be reversed, with sleeve once your stomach is removed it is gone forever.

Bypass is the gold standard in WLS.

Then she explained that the malabsorption was actually a good thing that would help me to lose more weight as long as I took my Vitamins and had my labs completed by my bariatric team. By the way you have to do the same for sleeve.

Lastly she reminded me that dumping was not automatic. Many people do not get it. If I did get it, I would learn what foods triggered it and stop eating the.

After talking with her, I did get a second opinion from my gastroenterologist. He agreed that bypass was my best option given my reflux condition. If I had the sleeve there would be nothing they could do to treat it further as I was on the highest dose of the best reflux medication. The only way to treat it would be to revise to a bypass anyway.

I decided to go with bypass because I only wanted to go through this surgery 1 time.

I have never ever regretted making that decision. Bypass cured my reflux completely, no more diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stage 3 kidney disease and sleep apnea. They are all in remission. I am down 119lbs in 11 months.

Oh, and I don't suffer from dumping syndrome at all.

No regrets here! Best thing I have ever done for myself as well.

Good luck to you with whatever you choose to do. Please make sure you continue your research. This topic has come up hundreds of times on this site. You might want to search using the word revision to see just how many folks end up revising after lap and and sleeve because of the reflux issue.

If I were you I would follow my doctors advice.

@@Djmohr -- how bad was your kidney disease? I don't know much about it but my mom is diabetic and has kidney failure (at least that seemed to be the way they stated it). She hasn't gone on dialysis yet but that is probably her next option.

I know you are not a doctor but I was wondering if having this surgery would help her or if she is too far gone now in the kidney area. How would I be able to find out? I don't live in the same state so can't go with her to her dr's appointments. Just had to ask because I really don't want her to go on dialysis.

And sorry to hijack the conversation.

Hi DJMohr,

Did you need a hiatal hernia that needed to be removed in order to help with your reflux issues?

I actually looked in to the sleeve, but when I researched it and read about the higher percentages of weight loss with the RNY I changed my mind immediately! I am 10 months out and 107 of 111 lbs lost. I have 4 lbs to go. I had a text book surgery and recovery with absolutely no side effects. So, no, I have no regrets. Nothing can compare to the feeling of pulling on size 4 Levi's and not having to pull hard to get them buttoned.

Wow! Size 4!! That is so exciting @@aelovelady !

How did you do so well? Any tips to share? What was the biggest thing that led to your success (other than the surgery)?

Awesome--congrats!

Even if I had very hard time for the first 4 months, right on the 5th month I feel lots energy, start work out, lost 70 lbs in 5 months, no more high blood pressure or sleep apnea. No knee pain, no back pain. Only little pain for working out. Still been very careful on what I eat. I only take Multivitamins, and B12 I can't tolerate Calcium. I'm finally living my new stomach!

Thank you so much for the kind and encouraging words. I am new to this site and need to learn more about navigating so I probably would have read previous comments on this subject. But if I had, I wouldn't have gotten these stories from you. Thank you thank you.

No regrets. No complications. Three months out. Happy and adjusting well, it's takes some getting used to but I feel better than I ever have in my life. So worth it!

I basically followed the rules, the first was the not drinking for 15 minutes before to 45 minutes after meals? To help with this I use the bariatric timer app on my phone. It really helps. The second is to eat for 25 full minutes, small marble sized bites spaced 1 minute apart and thoroughly chew. The longer food stays in your stomach the longer you stay full and third is to not take in any calories from liquids, which I follow pretty closely; even alcoholic drinks, I minimize calories wherever possible. Every day is not perfect, I slip up frequently? But I start every day with the intent to flow through and for the most part I stick wit it. My final suggestion is to track your intake, every bite, not that it's necessary, but it builds a consciousness about what you are eating, I use "my fitness pal"

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
