How much weight loss first 3wks

Recommended Posts

Everyone is different, so answers will vary.

It's all going to depend on your starting weight (the more you weigh, the more you will lose at first), age, whether you retain Water, etc....

I've seen people GAIN weight home from the hospital because of all the Fluid retention.

I've seen people lose anywhere from 10-25 pounds the first 3 weeks. I think I'd lost 15. Like I said, it varies so much for so many reasons.

Also, expect a stall soon after (usually starts around the 3rd or 4th week) Just the body taking a break after the quick weight loss. Then you will stabilize to a normal rate of loss of about 2-4 pounds a week.

No clue, I stayed off the scale entirely for the first few months except for weigh-ins at my doctor's office. So I didn't get on the scale until a month post-op (my surgeon doesn't weigh people at 2 week follow-up because that information is not meaningful). So, I was completely free from worry as to how much I was losing or how fast or was I having a stall. All I had to focus on was how well I was following my medical team's plan -- and that's all any of us really can control anyway.

My understanding is 20lbs, give or take 5lbs. It depends on the patient though, as there are a lot of different factors at play.

I'm not a scale person either. I rather just stick to plan and go to a department store pick a pair of jeans. Of course a size 2 smaller than i started and abracadabra they fit!!!! And repeat.... after a few dress sizes down then I'll re scale. Just until I get to a goal weight and maintaining :)

I lost 20 pounds in the first 3 weeks post op then had a 10 day stall. So weeks 3 and 4 were a 20 pound loss :)

That does't really answer the question that OP had. I don't agree that weighing once a month is the best solution for everyone. For me personally this is how I regained after the lap band failure I had. I stopped weighing daily and was able to trick myself into thinking I could "make up" my cheats before my next weigh -in. Now I am back to daily weighing and losing.

OP - I lost about 19-20lbs . Stalled after that for about 2 weeks and then resumed at 1 1/2 to 2 lbs per week. and now almost 25 lbs down

Wednesday will be 3 weeks for me, i have lost 16 lbs so far, but most of that was in the first 10 days, loss has slowed down. So i guess i will be about 17-18 down. I was hoping to lose a bit more, but i will take every lb i get.

I was sleeved July 20th, I am officially today 4 weeks post-op. I lost 12 pounds the first 2 weeks then I hit the dreaded stall. Which I hear is very normal. I was in a stall for the past 2 weeks. I have finally broken that stall. I actually gained 2 pounds now that is gone and I am loosing again. I guess this is fairly common in the beginning so don't worry about it if it happens to you.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
