Prunes have a lot of sugar and they didn't work for me. My doctor told me to be more aggressive with the laxatives and not worry too much about developing a dependence. Since I started taking his advice, I have been 10X more comfortable.

I also eat prunes daily but this doesn't always do the trick...what type of laxatives does everyone use?

Figs and dried apricots are my go-to remedy for getting regular.

I usually have half of a green apple and/or a coconut covered date as my sweet thing for the day. Seems to work like a charm. When I go off my plan and eat a standard American diet I get stopped up and miserable.

Taking colace, miralax, and other Fiber / laxative aids for a few months won't make you dependent on them for the rest of your life.

And also drink more Water. :)

When you're eating more, you can add more high-fiber veggies and fruit to your diet. Beans help a lot, too. So do whole grains. But all that comes in due time.

Oh ... and adding a probiotic capsule to your daily meds will also help. Shockingly so, in my case!

lots and lots of Water and stool softener for me.

I went from 2-3 BM's a day pre-surgery to 1-2 every few days.

I HATE any kind of laxative! I use Wellesse Digestive Health. It's got Fiber, aloe and prebiotics. Seems to be working well.

I like Metamucil. I asked my surgeon about drinking it and he said he was fine with it. It also helps get in a few extra oz of liquid and the citrus flavor tastes like tang, and the fiber helps you feel full in between meals. Plus it's not a laxative so it helps you go to the bathroom without making RUN to get there.

Miralax is also good. My son has had digestive problem in the past and his pediatrician prescribed it. But it's more of a laxative.

Probiotics REALLY help me.

Consider taking one daily.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
