Is a big appetite common?

Recommended Posts

I see a lot of posts about people having a big appetite, or not feeling restricted after surgery. Is this common or not the norm? I'm 2 days post on and have 0 interest in food. But I'm a little worried if I all of a sudden have a big appetite again.

My appetite didn't return for about 10 days. But the amount I eat has been significantly reduced. For example one egg for Breakfast and I'm stuffed. I do have to eat more frequently. When I track how much I eat for the whole day it's maybe 20% of what I used to.

I have a big appetite but my stomach won't let me eat it, lol. My mind wants 2 pieces of chicken macaroni and cheese , greens and cornbread , or a biscuit, but my stomach can only hold a drum stick. I have managed to stay away from the biscuits and cornbread though. If I were to eat a biscuit or non Protein foods I would fill up really quickly. My Nut said after surgery our stomachs would hold a cup of food. I can't eat a half of a cup of food (not complaining). When I eat now its like an automatic switch and I stop. If it is something I really like I wait it out til that food goes down and then eat some more but that was early on when I was starving from liquids transitioning to solids.

It's normal not to have an appetite yet. It will come back but everyone is different as to when and how big. What I can say is it doesn't matter how big it is you can only fit so much in before feeling full and if you try to over eat from there you will have a very uncomfortable reaction. So don't worry to much about it, you will be fine. You will be amazed at how little you eat before becoming full.

One thing I can say is there are certain foods you can eat alot more of than others. I think someone referred to them as slider foods. They are always the empty foods I should not be eating in my experience. Like crackers. I was told I could have wheat thins and soon realized I could eat alot of crackers. Weak moment. Lol. If I eat Protein foods like chicken etc I can only eat about 3 oz

I'm 7 months post and I still do not get hungry. I have to keep my food/fluid journal to stay on track or I would never eat. It is the weirdest thing I could never of imagined my relationship with food to change so much. Plus my tastebuds have changed..so what I use to love does not taste all that great. Good luck on your journey

My appetite did not return until I was about 8 months post op. Now at 13 months post op my appetite varies from day to day. Some days I am really hungry and some days not so much. I do eat more on days when I really workout hard. It all seems to balance out in the end. I have maintained my current weight for the last four months.

I'm 3 weeks post op and my appetite has returned and my sense of taste seems to be sharper. I don't yet know if this is a good thing, only time will tell. It's truly a case of my eyes being bigger than my stomach because I get full quickly which was the scenario I was hoping for, an enjoyment of food but a limited ability to eat too much.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
