I haven't been to one either. I was thinking about going to one in January, but I hate new social situations...lol. I'm getting better though, more confident. Glad to meet people who are with Dr. Ricks though. This is my second surgery with him, he did a double hernia repair for me last year and he was so amazing that it really made me rethink my years of swearing I'd never have WLS. It looks like you had your procedure about 3 weeks before I did. Hope everything is going well.

I don't mind at all! I don't know how to add you or I would lol I have not been to one yet, but I really should go to one!

Yeah he really is amazing! I'm doing good so far, I'm down 57 pounds. Pretty exciting. I was thinking about going in January too. It'd be nice to hear other people's experiences. I have a hard time getting the daily amount of Protein, but I'm trying. And I had to switch to the Vitamin Patches because I got tired of the chewable and got sick with the pills. How is it going for you?

Its great! 55lbs down so far. Don't tell John (the nutritionist) about the Patches, he will flip out...lol ( regardless...I use them too.) I have no problem with Protein, but I know what things are high in Protein, so I try to have cottage cheese a couple of times a day, turkey and tuna or cod. I eat 6 tiny meals a day instead of 3, it's the only way I can do it, because I cannot stand the shakes at all anymore.

Hey, I'm Greg from Illinois side. I'm awaiting for approval from insurance company. Have completed all the pre recommendations prior to being submitted to insurance. I have BCBS/IL insurance, was curious if anyone had any issues with delay of insurance approval ? My surgeon is Dr. Ricks, seems very down to earth. Has anyone else have an EGD Scope done prior ? Apparently, once surgery is approved I will need to go on a 14day clear liquid diet, cause of my BMI being at 63. Curious, if anyone has gone through same thing ? Have been a paramedic for 26 years and am ready to save myself now. Anyone, who has any advice or recommendations don't hesitate to send me a message. Thanks

I'm Greg, from Fairview Hgts. Patient of Dr. Ricks. Awaiting approval for surgery. Would be interested in attending or meeting others who have made a decision to save themselve and take on this new lifestyle journey. Have been a paramedic for 26 years, have always put everyone else first, except for myself.

Hi Greg! I have BCBS of IL and the approval process was pretty fast. It was less than 2 weeks. I was impressed. Good luck on your journey!

Yes, I was sleeved on 10/26/2016. I am almost 60lbs down and it is already just part of my life.

I only had a required 4 day liquid diet, but I did it for 9. I wanted to lose as much as possible pre surgery. I rocked the pre surgery liquids and the first week post surgery, the two week full liquid phase was by far the biggest struggle and from there it just got easier. The full liquid phase and the dreaded 3 week stall (you'll hear a lot about this here and not a lot of prep from doc or nutritionist) where mentally the hardest things I've have had to deal with through this process.

My insurance was United Healthcare and I had the approval in about a week.

Which procedure are you having?

I'm having gastric sleeve. Actually, just reconnected BSBC IL today. Spoke with another representative. He told me, my case as been signed off byna nurse and now it gets forwarded to a physician for his approval. Should be within 48hours of either being signed or denied by a physician at BCBSIL

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
