How much time off work?

Recommended Posts

I plan to take as much time as my Dr will authorize. I'm guessing his max will be 4 weeks but don't think for one second I won't try to get a couple extra weeks out of him!

I'm planning on two weeks but will take longer if I need to.

I had surgery Friday and was back at work Monday. I work in a slower paced office but I didn't hurt or anything. I taught at vacation Bible School the whole next week in the evenings and learned choreography for the musical I was in for the community theater. I am convinced that it was mind over matter. I didn't have time to mope around and I didn't want to. Best of luck with surgery but I highly recommend planning on getting on with your life and forging ahead.

I agree with everyone else. Each job is different as well as the person. I am a software manager and spend a majority of my time in front of a computer, one reason I feel like I was they way I was. I was sleeved on a Friday and back to work Monday. My bosses and the people directly under me knew what i had done and they were supportive so it made it easier to get into the groove of what i needed to do with Fluid intake and rest. The first week was tough but I'm glad I did it cause it helps you get your routines down right off the bat as my routines at home took a little longer to get down as I wanted to go back to my old ways.

If you have a good support system I beleive its better to surround yourself with that than trying to do it on your own.

I plan on taking the full 3-4 weeks but I'm a ICU nurse and so a lot of lifting and pulling.

I took 3 weeks, which was perfect for me. That third week I had absolutely no energy, so I was glad I was at home. I also went back on a Wednesday, and worked Wednesday and Thursday, then had Friday off for 4th of July. It was nice going back for a short week.

My surgeon told me to take 2 weeks. I initially scheduled 2 weeks off, but I was going stir crazy after 1 week so I went back on the 10th day after my surgery. I will admit, I did have to take a nap after work the first few days because I was worn out. And now this week, since starting my puree phase, it's a little difficult to get my "meals" in while I'm trying to see patients!

Like many others have mentioned, it really depends on you and your job. It's probably better to take too much time off than not enough. Good luck to you!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
