Exercise for the sake of exercise

Recommended Posts

We are all happy to come up with ideas for you, but everything that gets suggested comes back with " can't", "don't", or "won't," so I'm not sure what else you want us to suggest. You may just have to build your own exercise program to accommodate your wants and very specific needs. Let us know if we can be helpful in any other way. Have a good day !

This has become my most entertaining new thread.

Why entertaining? I am frustrated, alone and fighting debilitating disease and trying to not let that stop me from exercising and maintaining my 160 lb weight loss.

EXACTLY why I am frustrated!

1st off , congratulations on your big weight loss !!! Thats a huge accomplishment and you should be VERY proud of yourself !! I think they're s been alot of great suggestions, but since nothing works for you for one reason or another, you may have to ask yourself not "what CAN'T I do?" , but instead "what CAN I do ?" I know you're frustrated, but Im not sure what else to come up with. How about contacting the local hospital or Veterans Association and seeing what theys suggest for exercise options? You can't be the only person in your area that needs to exercise but has physical problems. Even volunteering at one of those places would give you an outlet for your "high energy" , ( a "workout " can be done in many different ways ) and be helpful to others , and still be accommodating of your disability. Win Win !! Good luck !!!

My second husband was a CO at a medium security facility in Orange County NY. I have a pretty good idea of what you are facing. We drove up near the Canadian border once and we were near one of the upstate prisons and he told me that if we lived up in that area, we could live like royalty on his salary. I told him over my dead body. Bars, barns, and rusting cars in the front yards was all I saw. Oh and trees, trees, and more trees.

My suggestion for you is to move closer to civilization. I belong to the Y and that's really what you need. Good luck and let us know if you find a solution to your problem.

I am waiting for an apartment to open, that will be closer to civilization. I'm sure that will make a huge difference! I love nature and being outside, but the isolation is killing me, lol!

Thank you! I am looking for things I CAN do, but I guess only people with the same issues and being in a VERY poor, isolated area would understand and be able to come up with ideas. I just want to be able to be on the move, on my feet, while doing something productive in between workouts. I sometimes just pace around in order to not have to sit down, sitting down makes me feel lazy.

I have been dealing with the medical issues for 8-20 years, diagnosed 7 years ago, and have not let that get in my way. None of the pain meds worked, so I am ALWAYS in some degree of pain, somewhere, yet no one would know, as I push through it to continue to fight to stay at my goal weight, which I've mainatained for 3 1/2 years, and always have a smile.

I'm saying this, because some of the responses, not necessarily from you, sound like I am making excuses. I am NOT that type of person, these are REAL issues.

Buy DVDs.

Are there any that you know of that are high energy, dance or Zumba? I've bought some that said they were, but they felt like slow motion to me. As long as I modify the arm moves, that would be a great option!

you'll have to investigate that on your own. I have found what works for me through trial and error. The best advice I would give is to save your receipts. If something doesn't live up to its promise, then return. I am on disability so I have to make every penny count.

How are you able to return DVD's once opened? If I buy one, open it to find it's not for me, it cannot be returned. I am also on disability and can't be buying DVD's to find out they are not for me, and be stuck with them.

You buy an exercise DVD from a reputable place. If you are in an area where options are limited, use Amazon. Read the reviews, if it promises a vigorous workout and isn't you return it. I've done it.

I have looked into meetup.com, but it's not in my area. I have also tried to find hiking or walking groups as that would be right up my alley. I do not know many people in my area, so would love to join some kind of group or club and have been searching for years. The only way to meet people in this area are bars :P

What are intensity balls? I have to be careful, what I do, due to several progressive, painful disabilities.

@@pink dahlia I'm looking for things that are more physical, and burns calories, those things are mostly sedentary things.

If you love hiking check out the Sierra Club. They have regional and local chapters with lots of outdoor outings. They also have service projects that can be very active.

I've volunteered at food banks and thrift stores for missions projects in the past. There are definitely some physical tasks and elbow grease required.

You could also volunteer for community clean-ups, community gardening, etc.

@@BLERDgirl I've bought some at Walmart and they do not accept returns of opened DVDs, will check Amazon though. That would be great, if I find someone that will accept returns, if it's not right for me! Thanks

If you have a roku or similar device or can stream online videos you might want to consider Gaima TV. They have some free videos and samples or you can subscribe to get access to all their videos. This might be a good way to try out some different exercise videos to see what you like. I haven't checked lately but they might have a free trial.

As I've explained, the only internet option I have is expensive and has a data cap, so videos online are not an option

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
