I have a 2 night stay. I'm planning on bringing lip balm, deodorant, toothbrush and travel toothpaste, brush and hair tie, phone and extra long charger. I'm going to wear comfy clothes in and wear the same clothes home. I may pack a pair of loose pj pants to wear under my gown so I'm more comfortable while walking.

Oh I did use chapstick too! A lot! I couldn't eat or drink anything for the three days I was in there but I was allowed to use these little sponges on sticks in ice Water to wet my tongue and such. They were so cute!

I had a 1-night hospital stay, and like a lot of others, I packed more than I needed. My hospital is about 25-30 minutes from my house.

What I packed and actually used:

  • Chapstick--my lips were really dry after surgery
  • Heating pad--I put it behind my shoulder blades, and it helped a lot with the gas pain
  • Pillow--it was comforting to have my own memory foam one in addition to the hospital ones
  • Kindle--by midday the day after surgery, I wanted something to do between laps of the floor. The noise of the TV irritated me, so I just read something that I've read before, nothing deep.
  • Scrunchie & hairbrush--the soft scrunchie worked better for me than a regular hair tie so I didn't have an uncomfortable bump on the back of my head when I rested it against the pillow
  • My surgery binder--I have all my paperwork, instructions, etc. in a binder that I take to all my appointments

What I packed and never used:

  • Shorts--like others, I just wore a second gown like a robe when I was up. I also just wore the grippy socks they give you to walk, no need for slippers
  • Multiple changes of underwear--I don't usually wear underwear to bed, and didn't want to be fumbling them up and down, so frankly I just went commando the whole time
  • Incontinence pads--I have stress incontinence and was worried about needing them if I was throwing up. Never puked in the hospital, never wore underwear anyway
  • Toothbrush & toothpaste--just used the ones the hospital provided, as they were already in the bathroom
  • Face wipes--I went home the afternoon after surgery and just figured I'd wait until I got home to get cleaned up
  • Biotene mouth spray--I was allowed ice chips once I got to my room, so I didn't need it
  • Gas-X strips--the heating pad and walking helped my gas pain, didn't need them
  • Phone charger--I didn't turn my phone on until just before I was discharged, so no need of it
  • Extension cord--thought I might need it for the charger or heating pad, but my hospital is brand-new and tricked out, so there was a free outlet right next to my bed

A pillow. The hospital ones are not comfortable.

So many great ideas and suggestions! Thank you all. I don't think I'll bring too much since the consensus is I probably won't use it, which makes sense.

I've been reading on many posts that the gas is one of the biggest struggles while in the hospital. I sure hope it goes smoothly for me. I'll keep y'all posted!

I was too doped up to use any of my gadgets, however, a pillow for the ride home would have been nice-lots of pain????

I did go with in addition to Chapstick which was a blessing. It was a positive attitude. I think that was huge. My surgeon does surgeries on Mondays and Tuesdays. I was sleeved on Tuesday. So if you can imagine the halls were full of people attempting to walk after their procedure as there is only a 12 bed unit. Now I'm not Susie sunshine but there were quite a few people that were very negative about the experience which then I believe probably affected how they felt. I have the expectation that it was going to hurt and how much pain I was willing to put up with. I never let my pain get past a bad period pain, just a little higher. However I did find a lot of relief in walking. I literally walked until almost 11 o'clock at night the first day at least every hour about 200 to 300 feet each time. As I was walking through the hallway there were some such as myself, and then others who appeared very miserable and extremely medicated. I guess just set a limit for yourself and really push to get moving. On my one week postop surgery I walked 1 mile with my dogs at home. I started walking during my mandatory supervised weigh ins for four months. At that time I could only go about .2 miles and slowly build myself up to where I'm at now. I think that I really anticipated a lot of pain because of the YouTube or other blogs but I have been blessed with a great experience I hope yours goes well too.

I didn't bring much other than the bare essentials like my cell, deodorant, hair brush, toothpaste/brush, extra pair of undies and socks and the clothes I wore to the hospital. Make sure you to take loose fitting clothes.

I usually chuckle when I see these type of posts..... They should be in the powder Room. Men and women just do things differently...And that's OK.....that's the way it should be.

From a guy point of view.....which I'm sure the OP really isn't interested in.......I came to the hospital the day of surgery with shorts and T shirt on, wearing flip flops.....and that's it. No bag, no wallet, keys, no jewelry, no nothing. Put the clothes in their plastic bag before surgery and then put them back on in the room after surgery. (Makes walking the halls after surgery a little more dignified). Then wore them home two days later.

But then, that guys....we're just that way...... ;)

PS. Besides, for what it was costing......I treated it like a hotel.....if I needed something I just asked for it like room service. Everything was just fine.

Ashley126, here's the thing about shoulder gas..........it is residual CO2 left over from the surgeon expanding your abdominal cavity so that it is easier to manipulate the surgical tools. I was so worried about it that I asked my surgeon how he handles pain management in that respect. He said that he extracts as much as possible before closing up. Needless to say, I did not have any issue with gas pain at all. I do not know why more surgeons don't take that one little extra step.

chapstick, toothbrush and clean undies. Wore home the same sweats I wore in. The less you take the less you could lose. Plus you won't use anything. When you aren't sleeping you are up walking, then you go home.

Makeup remover? You will have no energy to put on makeup! I packed a bag but only ended up using my toothbrush and hairbrush. Bring a change of clothes to leave in.

I stayed in my gowns the whole time, commando - underwear bands may rub up on your incisions, same with the underwire of a bra when sitting up.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
