Talk Clothes and Style to Me!

Recommended Posts

Hi all, thought i'd start a topic around clothes I've got a heap of questions feel free to pick and choose and discuss!

How did/do you mange your clothes through the shrinking phrase?

Did you ever go on a shopping spree only to find a few months later it was all too big and it was a waste of money? Or did you just by a few essentials on the way down?

Did your style change? or did it stay the same and you are still not sure how to dress your new shape?

If you were at a normal healthy weight at some point in your adult life did you keep those clothes and can you wear them now? Or has your sense of style totally changed form then?

Do you find yourself wanting to show more skin than you used or still just as conservative (if you ever were :))

For me I'm at the start of the journey, but I've lost significant weight before, I wear clothes that suit my rather large figure but aren't my sense of style at all, I can't wait to reach a near healthy weight and dress in clothes I actually like. I plan to just kind of dress who I am on the way down, Don't want to waste too much money over the next 6-8 months on anything but a couple of pair of work pants and tops to get me through.

I think I'm going to wait a little while before I buy new set of clothing. I'd like to wait until I reach my goal weight, that way I don't waste too much money on buying clothing I may only use for a couple of weeks. However, I will most likely buy some clothing just so I have stuff to wear. Wouldn't want to look sloppy! As for style, I don't think I want to change the way I dress because I haven't changed my personality! (Or I hope not, hehe). I will most likely stay with my same style :P

Fortunately, I'm not working right now so I don't have to dress up very often (or even wear a bra most days if I don't want to)! I currently wear a lot of dresses so I can wear them through several sizes.

I am already down one size in a bathing suit and just bought the next size down so I will be ready!

When I get to a normal size/weight I would like to go to a nice department store and use the personal shopper service to build a nice work wardrobe. It will be nice to be able to buy good clothes off the rack for once.

2nd hand shops/thrift stores are helpful to pick up a few pieces here and there as fillers until you're ready to splurge

Great topic. I work in the corporate world and this is a big struggle for me. Right now - on non-casual days, I have been using yoga pants with my sweaters and nice shirts. Only recently have my shirts been getting too baggy - but a belt is doing wonders around the waist for my shirts.

I imagine I will have to shop soon but so far, the yoga black pants are a god send.....

For now I am buying just enough to get by without looking bad at work. Something I wore last week now falls off so it's hard to invest too much in it. Once I get closer to goal I will invest a little more at a time.

The bad news is the close you get to goal, the fast you will change sizes! The good news is, the closer you get to goal the fster you change sizes! If you have any consignment stores in your are, they are a gold mine for fahionable clothes you won't see everywhere and they are inexpensive!

Every couple of months I buy a few pieces (I don't work outside the home) and wear them until they are falling off. I love that I am no longer in plus size clothing and am finding it harder to not want to shop shop shop!!! I still have 50-60lbs to go so that stops me from buying too much.

So far I have had enough smaller clothes to take to work and at home ( you know clothes bought during all the yoyo dieting that I always wanted to wear once again). But now that I have gone from size 20 to 14 I am running out of clothes. For work I will probably buy a couple of pairs of pants (black and one other) and a few shirts... Casual wear I will keep wearing my bigger clothes.

I did splurge and bought a few work out clothes - I can now fit into Nike XL tights and a xl work out tech shirts :)

I can't help it. I love clothes. So on the way down in sizes (from size 28 to size 4), I kept buying things because they looked good. Of course, I only got to wear them for a month or so before they became sloppy looking. I should have bought just a few nice things from thrift stores to hold me until I reached my goal weight, but the truth is that I enjoyed having fashionable clothes that looked good on me. What a change from my previous practice of purchasing clothes because they were reasonably appropriate and they sort of fit.

I don't know if it's my new figure, or my age, but I'm finding myself enjoying bold colors and Bo-ho styles. I guess you can take the hippie out of the 60's, but you can't take the 60's styles out of the hippie.

@@AquariusDiva I, too, have some "saved" clothes. I am surprised that I am down 75 lbs and I still have clothes that previously fit, for I haven't been down to this weight for quite some time. It also surprises me that there was a time just three years ago that I was able to wear these. Must be the elastic! I, too, want to buy new clothes, but cannot afford to purchase. Thrift stores are my friend.

Luckily for me, I had about 3 different sizes in my closet from my years of many, many weight loss/gain phases, so I could shop in my own closet for a while. It's been a couple of months now that I've undergrown those clothes (YAY). I do a lot of consignment and clearance rack shopping. Target, Penny's and even Macy's have excellent clearances! I'm only about 12 or so pounds from goal now, so I anticipate going down maybe one more size. We will see. If I do, then it's a shopping I will go!

I am at the beginning of my journey, only 2 month out from being sleeved. I had two sizes smaller than what I was wearing packed away. Everything else was donated years ago. So I'm enjoying wearing clothes I haven't worn in quite some time. As things get too big, I toss them into a donate pile. I know that I'll need to shop soon. I have already bought 2 sizes in workout wear. I plan to just buy what I need to make it through... maybe a couple of pairs of work pants... maybe a dress or two, perhaps they will last a little longer if they can be belted. I'm not quite sure yet... I have looked into Gwynnie Bee and I'm still tossing that around.

I can see my style changing. I'm 34 years old and I have been wearing big girl clothes that are not that fashionable. I would definitely like to wear more cute things that are more fashionable and that look good on me. I can't wait to be there!

My current job doesn't require me to get dressed up so I live in leggings and workout clothes and even then I still don't have a lot. I have a closet full of clothes sizes XL/large/14 from when I did have to dress business casual (that I currently cannot fit). My plan is to buy a few things from thrift stores until I reach my goal weight. At that time, I will take my kid to daycare and go on a shopping spree. Just the thought alone excites me. Also, once I can no longer fit the clothes in my closet, I want to literally empty the entire thing out and take it to Goodwill.

I have always loved clothes! I have given away or destroyed bags items over the last few months! My first goal was size I2! I am now in 10's and it keeps going down! Happy dance low, low low how low can I go? I want to get to a size 6 or 4 by Christmas okay New Years! I just want to be healthy and really a "little lady." Yes, I have always loved clothes! I have to show control and not waste money. "Sale" is my favorite word!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
