Are any of you still on insulin? Months after surgery even years? ... I am type 2 have been for 12 years and on insulin for 8 years I take 2000 mg of metformin 5 mg of farxiga 90 units of levimir and 30- 60 units of humalog daily along with other meds. I'm hoping that I can drop all but the levemir and reduce it by the time I am done .... My getting surgery is a two edged sword, while it is the correct choice I may loose my retirement income if I completely go off all insulin.

I was diagnosed with type 2 about 15 years before my surgery. Off and on through they years I was on Glucovance and Glucovage (spelling?). In May of 2012, I was very ill with bronchitis, the flu and a sinus infection, under an incredible amount of stress and unbeknownst to me, my sugar levels were sky high and I had a stroke. After the stroke, I was on 5 injections a day and 2000 mg of Metformin. Over the next year, I gained 50 lbs. It was so fast and furious, my hips go so bad and I could barely walk.

September 2013, I had my surgery and was told to stop taking the insulin shots and the Metformin. 6 months after surgery, I was put back on the Metformin and the dosage was gradually increased back to the 2000 mg's a day. I'm also now on 1/4 of a 5mg pill of Glipize twice a day. My A1C has decreased dramatically and my daily numbers are very good.

I've lost 90 something lbs and will probably always be on meds, but hopefully never injected insulin again. I'm not sure that I would take it ever again. Everybody reacts differently to the weight loss. If there is no reason for you to be ON insulin, not sure how you could lose income over it. One thing shouldn't have anything to do with the other.

9 months post op, RNY. Was on an insulin pump for 5 years taking over 100 units of insulin daily, type 2 diabetic.

Now I take nothing for diabetes. Following the Bariatric diet is controlling my sugar levels . Hopefully by maintaining the Bariatric lifestyle I will remain in remission.

Pokey Jo ty for responding ... The reason I would loose my income is because insulin forced me to retire on a medical disability I used to drive city bus. If I am no longer insulin dependent they may tell me I have to roll my remaining retirement into a new plan and go back to work... I don't want to go back to driving bus I would have to start all over

I was insulin dependant before my RNY surgery and left the hospital with no meds at all. While I'm very new post op I'm very optimistic about my diabetes remaining in remission. As far as your fears about work...I would much rather return to work than live/die with diabetes any day. Maybe if you changed your outlook and not view things as starting all over, it may help you realize it's actually more of a new beginning. Explore your options, don't let something like fear of returning to work stop you from possibly prolonging your life. I'm sure your family would choose YOU over a retirement check hands down....good luck!
