Gained weight during Diet

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone! So I am still in my 6 month Doctor Supervised weight loss period. I'm starting month 5 here soon and I'm a little nervous about insurance. My starting weight at the beginning was 300 pounds and last doctor visit I weighed 305. I have gained right around a pound each doctor appointment. I have stuck to my diet the majority of the time with a few cheats here or there. (I have BCBS of AL)

Has anyone else gained weight and still gotten approved?

Thanks!

@ are you on insulin or any diabetes meds? That can make a difference. It's very hard to lose on insulin especially.

I'm sorry to hear about the gain, that's frustrating. Keep trying though. I know I really cut down even more carbs specifically which helped me reach my goal during that 6 month period.

Best of luck to you! You can do it!!

I have PCOS and take metformin for it. I'm insulin resistant. Ever since I got diagnosed with the PCOS several years back it seems like it has gotten harder and harder to lose weight. Or if I do lose some weight its because I work out 6-7 days a week for 1hr n half. I'm just really nervous that my insurance is going to deny me because of the gain. They don't count PCOS as a co-morbidity.

@ I'm going to keep my fingers and toes crossed for you!

I wish insurance companies would recognize just how hard it is for people with PCOS. I have it too. Plus, you take metformin. Both strikes against you to lose.

What worked best for me was really cutting back the carbs. Even more than the specified diet, because I know when I do, I will lose more weight.

I can totally understand your nervousness. If you ever want to chat, friend me :) Sounds like we have some stuff in common.

Thanks, I appreciate it!

I'm going to look into keeping up with carbs and see if that helps some. I don't see how it could hurt!

I gained weight. Insurance (UHC) said they didn't care. My surgeon does. I have to lose 10 lbs in 2.5 months.

You have to really work on it this month. I'm not sure what you goal was et at. I had a twenty pound weight loss goal. At preop yesterday I was still 3 pounds away.I am doing 2 Protein Shakes a day and a lean cuisine. It isn't the easiest thing in the world but it is working even when i have had tose days were i have gone over board on my eating because I think I am never gong to have this again. I also started my liquid diet and it has made it a lot esier.

My surgeon doesn't have any weight loss goals! He has habit goals each month! I love him!!

I gained the first two months but lost last month and I think I am down today-- headed for 4th weigh in in a few minutes.

My insurance doesn't have any requirement on losing weight during he six months. Did you read the policy? You might want to get a copy to ensure you have all requirements! You could call them too! ????

My weight loss goal is at least 10-15 lbs. I have switched my diet to a High Protein Low Carb diet and its working thus far! I have lost 5 pounds in the past 2 weeks alone. So excited to finally find something to help me lose weight. I haven't started drinking the Protein Shakes yet, but I have in the past. I planned to start those in July since I will have to drink them for a week straight before surgery and after surgery. What's helped you not be so hungry just being on a liquid diet? I think that is what I will struggle with(being hungry all the time).

I did read my policy and had my surgeon's office read it and nowhere does it say I have to lose weight. But I'm just wondering would they deny me since I did gain some weight originally. My surgeon is requiring me to lose at least 10 pounds by surgery which isn't bad. Good Luck with your weigh in!! :)

i was down 3 lbs-- scheduled my EGD for next month-- crazy!!

I have only heard one insurance company deny for a net gain, but I believe they list this info in the policy.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
