PANIC-NO WEIGHT LOSS FROM SURGERY!

Recommended Posts

Right after surgery - 3 days I had lost 5 pounds. This was still from my pre-op diet I believe because it was the first time I had weighed in 3 days and I had been losing 15 pounds a month thus whole year. Now it has been 31/2 weeks since my surgery and I have ACTUALLY GAINED 2 POUNDS!! I am on liquids only and walking. I would have lost 10 pounds by now without the surgery!!!!! Hate this!!!!

I totally understand your frustration not seeing the scale cooperating. I can't count how many times it hasn't cooperated with me in 9 months. I am an extremely slow loser, and on top of it I stall a lot. At 6 months, I went through a 6 week stall for no apparent reason.

That being said, this is your 3rd post about not losing after surgery. I also believe you have gotten some sound advice from many people in those previous posts. One of which I'm sure is STAY OFF THE DAMN scale. It's obviously causing you some emotional turmoil, which isn't helping matters. Fluctuations in weight are normal. Not losing a whole lot immediately after surgery is normal. Between Water retention and the body just needing to adjust, it happens. You are physically not eating enough to gain, so you know it's not that. Just the normal fluctuations.

Give your NUT a call and set up an appointment if that will make you feel better. I would suggest just making sure you're meeting your Fluid and Protein requirements, hide the scale for a month and take your measurements. A month from now, you will be pleasantly surprised. And not driving yourself crazy.

I 100% back what @@Babbs said. This is normal! I had a stall at week 3 that lasted 2.5 weeks. I also gain a couple pounds. Just this weekend the scale started moving. I had my doubts and frustrations too. I really, really worked on hitting my Protein goals (because I'm a SADI I have to get 80-100 grams) and that can be a challenge since I developed an adversion to many of the shakes just after the stall started. If you are on soft foods start adding fish to your diet several times a week, tuna, salmon, crab legs, turbot, anything. Fish is very high in Protein but low calorie and easy to digest.

I am meeting my Water and Protein goals. My waist is back to measuring what it was 20 pounds heavier but I figure that is swelling from surgery. I did see my NUT and surgeon Friday, they don't have any explanation for me just come back in a month. My NUT just trys to sell me Vitamins and Protein Powder every time I go. I could stay off the scale that is probably sound advice. I know I won't follow it though lol! I just can't believe I had weight losssurgery and it stopped my weight loss. I am becoming seriously depressed.

It didn't stop your weight loss. You are just recovering from major surgery. The Protein and Water will help you heal and lose weight.

Patience, grasshopper.

@@lynneanne just hang in there. This process really messes with your head. I'm 7 weeks post op and have already had two huge stalls, one where i even gained 4 lbs. Then it just started dropping again. Trust yourself and the surgury. Do what you need to and give your body time to adjust. It's a big shock to the system. You'll get there.

I know you might not be comforted by this right now, but let me pipe in with my $0.02. Your body is different from everyone else's, but only up to a point. If you follow your doctor's post-op diet, you will lose weight. Maybe not at the rate you would like, but you will lose. This is when you have to take yourself in hand and breathe through the frustration. Time will pass whether you stress out or not. But it will pass more pleasantly if you try to relax. Don't get me wrong, I felt the same way you do at the beginning of my post-op period. Someone on this board gave me the same advice I'm passing on to you. Good luck. I look forward to reading about your progress.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
