I can't drink any protein! Help

Recommended Posts

Sometimes it takes a while to find the right Protein shake. I did a trial run 2 weeks before my surgery. I think I tried at least 10 different kinds. Finding a Protein Shake you like really can be a matter of trial and error.

My main problem is built up gas... I walk, take gas x, deep breaths, but not enough comes out. Eventually the pressure wins out and I vomit. All the gas want to come up, not go down. I think I've only farted like twice in 2.5 weeks since my sleeve. Normal?

I have had a lot of gas too. So I figured I'm getting about 400 calories a day, no Protein Drinks, and all of week three I had no weight loss. I'm so weak and tired. I had diarrhea again today. It really doesn't matter what I eat. This has been the hardest thing I have ever done. Regretting my decision!

Dont feel bad, I am 6 days full liquid preop and can only choke down 2 a day. Same end results-pun intended. Weak, pissy, headaches, it sucks and I know this is the hardest damn thing to date I have done. My surgery is next Thursday so not much longer.

Hang in there! It will get better. This is probably the hardest thing you will go through but once you are past this difficult phase, it'll be smooth sailing!

@@Kristy Haugen Oliver - Seriously, I can't say this enough. Call your nutritionist and discuss these issues. She may come up with alternative Protein solutions. You don't have to suffer and you need protein to heal and lose safely.

Don't forget the post - op diet which is likely to be some form of a liquid diet.< /p>

@@Kristy Haugen Oliver, It can be hard to drink Protein drinks - as others have mentioned so many of them are thick, creamy, and can be tough on your stomach. I'm sorry you're having to go through this.

Many surgeons will give you free sample packs for some of the Protein Shakes if you ask - you might want to check with yours. Depending on where you live, you can also ask at your local vitamin/supplement store if they allow returns for drinks that don't agree with you - GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, and VitaminLife will often allow you to 'sample' shakes to find one that agrees with you. It's certainly in their best interest to get you to try 10, find 1 that works and then buy it hundreds of times in the future :)

Have you tried Syntrax Nectar? It's much closer to a juice or tea (the lemon tea is my favorite) than a traditional Protein Drink and doesn't leave your mouth with that weird felt-like sensation Isopure.< /p>

Also, how are you doing with broths? If you make a hard Bone Broth high in Gelatin it won't be a 'protein drink' at all but is still pretty high in protein. My favorite is the Pho broth here. It takes a while to make but will last you a while, keep you from becoming sodium deficient (a real problem at this stage, believe it or not), is cheap to make, and has plenty of protein for early post-op.

Yes I know, just one day at a time looking towards the horizon.

I hate "shakes" so I get my Protein from protein juices. Try pre-made Isopure zero carb. The one I have is passion fruit, but there are other flavors. Tastes great! I get it from max muscle in their refrigerator. Or Syntrax Nectar from Amazon or Vitamin world. They are like fruit juices too, but you have to mix them. They can get a little clumpy, but if you just let it sit for a while the clumps go away. They sell trial packets at vitamin world too so you can try it before you buy a huge container.

I was given packets of ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrate (15 G protein) in the hospital and to bring home. They were a big help the first few days. I put them over a little bit of crushed ice and ate them like slushies.

OP check with GNC. They told me I could return any of the Protein Shakes that I did not like within 30 days for a full refund. TIP: Tape your receipt to the tub/bag so you don't lose it.

I would definately talk to your NUT for alternatives. It does sound like you may have developed a lactose intolerance. It is not uncommon after WLS. If that is the case even the whey Protein can be an issue.

Your NUT may recommend MoM or something along those lines.

I know that pumpkin pack is the great equalizer for pets. If they are bound up or loose give them a tablespoon or two for a few meals and it makes things normal. Do not use the pumpkin pie pack, it has spices. For the dogs it is fed straight out of the can. I am not sure how that would work for people.

1. Contact the Isopure company. Their contact info is here. As long as you have your receipt you should be able to return any unused portion.

2. Please contact your doctor or nutritionist and discuss your issues. You may do better with non milk based Protein waters and/or juices, but you may not. Either way you should discuss alternate ways to get your protein in with the people you paid to provide your medical care.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
