Hello all,

I am 6 days post op, today was a very disappointing day for me. We had a bbq and I totally gave in. I had a little of a hot dog, some chips, a little Soup, and some cucumbers... idk what the hell happend. I felt very little discomfort, no vomiting, nausea, diarrhea. There are days that I can drink over 32 oz of Water in just one sit in. Today I sit here feeling guilty, unknown of what to do. This might sound silly, and yet over dramatic but I don't know what to feel. Any advice as to why I didn't get sick or feel discomfort, why I kept eating as if I was still hungry. Help

I am not a bariatric specialist or surgeon so all I can share is what I have been told/advised.

When you have part of your stomach removed, nerves are damaged. It can take about 6 weeks before you actually "feel" accurate sensations from your stomach. I personally found that tidbit of knowledge scary and it really made me rigid about complying with my "food progression" from liquids to solids. I was scared of causing damage. I was terrified of developing a leak or other complication.

What is done is done - what you can do now is immediately get back on your program and just do it. The big mistake would be to let this be the first in series of "messing up" in these early weeks. Truth is - none of us are perfect but we all know this is serious business and need to do our very best to have much success and get healthy.

Now, I am guessing the reason you didn't have diarrea is you didn't eat lactose (milk/dairy products) and you didn't eat sugar. The worst and I mean worst experience I had was about 2 weeks post op when i added some creamy Peanut Butter to a Protein drink. It was Christmas and I was still on liquids and feeling sorry for myself not being able to have the holiday meal with my family (I had a very slow progression to solids since I was a revision from band and had lots of scarring - surgeon was being extra conservative for me) . OMG, I think I had what is called dumping syndrome - but I felt like I might die. I am sure it was the richness and sugar in the Peanut Butter. You should count your lucky stars you didn't have that happen as I thought I might just die right there. (diarrea, sweats, hot and cold nausea, and general feeling of horrible)

Thank you sooooooo much, I truly appreciate your feedback. I was beating myself up all night. I didn't understand why I did that to myself. I felt the guilt eating at me all night. I took a hour walk and I still felt super guilty. I'm glad it's over, today is a new day.

Don't feel bad about this, BUT DON'T DO IT AGAIN! You do not want to do anything that causes a leak. It's tough right now, (trust me I'm going through it as well - 2 weeks post-op) but time will fly by and you will be able to eat normally soon. Remember why you had the surgery...and don't let old habits rule you any longer.

First off What kind of surgery did you have? Dumping doesn't usually happen to people who had the Gastric sleeve. I to had a bite of a hot dog 8 days out, not the bun only the hot dog, I chewed it over 40 times before i swallowed it, I also had a little bit of spaghetti the next day and a bite of ice cream. I had no side effects AT ALL!!! I swallowed really slow and took small bites. I felt and feel fine. Im still doing my shakes. This morning 11 days out I had some scrambled eggs. Sometimes I think it depends on the individual. the day after surgery i was out Gambling and shopping for I did my procedure in Las Vegas. I feel great. not to mention I lost 28 pounds. dont stress over it you know youre body better than anyone else. Hang in there. Soon you will eat again but you will get full and satisfied really quick.

You most definitely should not do that. Just because you CAN eat something, doesn't mean you should. You may not have had any side effects, such as diarrhea or vomiting, but that doesn't mean everything is okay.

When you are supposed to be on liquids, it's for a reason. When you eat solid foods, even if you chew them well, they may go down easily and even not come up, but what it does is put weight inside your very new little stomach pouch, which can cause a tear at the staples near the diaphragm, possibly resulting in a leak, pain, bleeding, etc.

In short, you're supposed to be on liquids for a reason. Listen to your doctor. The liquid phase is not to make you miserable, but rather for your safety and the successful healing of your sleeve.

You made a mistake, but seriously try not to do that again. I know it's hard. I was still on liquids during Easter, when my family had a huge BBQ. I had to leave, because the smell was getting to me, and I didn't want to mess up.

It's rare, but sleeved folks can and do get dumping syndrome. I agree with others. Consider this a one off, but stick to your program. I sometimes feel like I have a stomach made of steel since I've not gotten sick from anything I've eaten, but I also think part of the reason following your doctor's orders is that it's good training for changing old eating habits.

This is not directed to the OP, but in general - the sleeve is not supposed to make you sick/vomit/dump! That isn't the goal! The goal is to live happily with much less food and not need this super tight restriction. It is to learn to eat fairly normally actually - for a thin chick which frankly most Americans are NOT. But, that takes time.

We ALL make mistakes, so no judgement there.

I had the lapband for 10 years and vomited way more than I care to admit. We didn't get along and i would go from starving to vomiting in an unpredictable instant. Thankfully, that has not been my sleeve story.

I have had the one "episode" that I believe was dumping and have vomited a few times from the sleeve. every single vomiting event post sleeve was from inhaling food. Just like the OP, I don't know WHY I did it, but I did.

This is a journey and while I am concerned of course about any damage done - aint a single one of us that deserves a lecture for "owning up" to mistakes. The goal is to learn from those mistakes, do the emotional growth whilst the physical shrinking is happening... and keep on keeping on!

I know how you feel. I was freaking out because i could put down so much liquid. I also ate before i should have with no side effects. You can't feel how much you eat. I'm 6 weeks out today. I can definitely tell when i eat to much now. .. it comes back up. I'm now working in that 1/2 a cup everyone is talking about. The stricture will come. Follow that post op diet. You'll give yourself no reason to flip out that way. This is also a good time to realize the surgery is a tool. You still have to decide what to eat.

@@nayriquerouoli - Just remember the goal is not to feel full but to feel sated. Full can be one step too far and is often uncomfortable. Hang in there. It's a learning curve but you can do this.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
