Hi All-

I was just given a surgery date of June 9th for my sleeve! I'm very excited, but I feel like it's all happening very quickly. I just started the process two weeks ago. My question is this- I asked my doctor's nurse about liquid pre-op diets and she said that my doctor doesn't have a requirement for that unless he believes you have a "fatty liver" and apparently my blood tests all came back great. She said the only thing I'll be required to do is a clear liquid diet the day before.

Do you think it would still be smart to do at least a few days of the Protein shakes and stuff leading up to the surgery? I'll ask my doctor the next time I see him, of course. But I think it might help me get into the swing of things before surgery- especially considering I'll have to be on all liquids after it's done.

Has anyone else had experience with a doctor who doesn't require a pre-surgery diet?

Thanks!
Brittany

@@burtonbn Yes, my doctor only required light meals two days before surgery, then Clear Liquids only the day before. That's it -- thank goodness :o)

PS - I'm 10 weeks post-bypass and doing well -

Every surgeon is different with their pre AND post-op plans. I think if you wanted so maybe replace one meal a day with a Protein Shake now, it might help you figure out what you like and dislike rather than experimenting post-op.

@@burtonbn - My doc was the same and I think I'm doing fine. I loved being able to eat all my favorite things the weekend before. If you feel like you need to do the liquid thing prior to surgery, go for it, though. It won't hut you!

Good luck in your journey!!!

You are only the second person I have read on this site in fifteen months that has not had to do the pre-op liquid liver-shrinking diet at least to some extent. It is rare. Count your blessings. I agree that for practice you could replace one meal with a Protein shake.

I didn't have to have a pre op diet either. The day before surgery I only had Clear Liquids. Had no problem.

After reading so many posts about a Pre-op diet, I was getting all prepared for it. I saw my surgeon this morning and I asked him about it and he said since I was in great health besides my BP and asthma, I do not have to do a Pre-op anything.... Only the night before surgery, nothing to eat after 10pm. Oh and he said do not gain any more weight. My surgery is April 29th, which I got today.

Thanks for all the replies! I might take your advice and just start out by replacing one meal a day with a shake so that I know what they taste like for afterwards. I just want to make sure I'm in the right mindset going into it, so I can be successful on the other side :)

@@burtonbn I didn't have to do a pre-op diet either (other than the suggested healthy eating diet the NUT puts everyone on prior to surgery to make sure you are committed and educate you on healthy eating for those that don't know) . Just clear liquid diet the day before which is normal for almost any surgery. Doing great. I did start doing some shakes here and there ahead of time, to find out what I liked, which I would highly recommend. GOOD LUCK and Congrats on the date!!

Mine isn't asking for one either.

Glad I saw this post. I was only given a one week shake diet before surgery and was getting a little freaked out that it wasn't long enough.

Me too. The week before I pigged out on all my favorites. Kinda like saying goodbye to them. Day before my surgery. All liquid diet

I have no pre-op diet as well, just instructed to not gain weight. I will not learn well until I am forced though, hence my lack of self-control on my own that has gotten me to this place. So I don't feel as prepared for what's to come after surgery this way. I am scheduled in May, and am anxious and grateful. Gotta knock off the coffee at the least, as I don't want a headache I cannot take medication for post-op. I will miss my morning cup of coffee, and noodles :D

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
