Ladies over 50 - bypass

Recommended Posts

I hope I'm not re-inventing the wheel here, but I found a nice thread in the Gastric sleeve forum by accident, of only ladies over 50 years old. I have looked for something similar here for us bypass patients as well but didn't see one. If this is a duplicate please point me in the right direction.

I'm almost 53, still pre-op but hopefully on track to have surgery in June. I will have my 3rd of 3 nutritionist visits in 2 more weeks, have my psych eval scheduled in 2 weeks and then they'll submit, then schedule the EGD and then surgery.

I've been overweight ever since having my first child 22 years ago, gaining too much with each pregnancy and then not losing all of it before the next one (3 kids, youngest is now 13.5). But it was emotional eating through a bad marriage that was the real cause. I'm separated now and ready to do this for me, to become more active again and be able to do things with my kids and eventually grandkids.

I'm 54 and having RNY surgery 4/28. I've been overweight my entire life and have had enough of diabetes, sleep apnea, and now arthritis. I'm ready to go!

I'm 61! Had my RNY October 28, 2014. I've lost 86 pounds since my pre-op liquid diet and am doing great. I wish I had done it 10 years ago when I first started thinking about it. It is not too late. Good luck!

Hello All

I'm new to this site, just been hanging in the background checking out what others are saying. I'm 54 and scheduled for RNY on May 5 2015. Will start liquid diet this coming Tuesday. Anxious. Not because of surgery , more anxious and afraid of failure after surgery.

(And of the surgery a little bit too) ????

I live just outside of Philadelphia PA

Looking forward to connecting with fellow "losers" , that can offer support and share what they have learned that has made their weight loss a success. Look forward to victims often

I'm 59 - had RNY January 29 of this year, so almost 10 weeks post-op now -- and down 55 lbs since surgery plus 10 lbs pre-op.

I am afraid, too. Not of surgery so much, but that I'll be one of the few people it doesn't work for. Or that I'll lose a bunch and then not be able to maintain. I'm working on breaking bad habits now before surgery, but part of me thinks it's inevitable to regain eventually. I sure hope not!

Hello Everyone!! I am almost 51 yrs old (5/16) I had my RNY on 12/8/14 and have lost 80 lbs in total!! Off all the BP medications and have complete resolution of the sleep apnea that keep me in a fog of exhaustion for 2 years!!! I have no regrets (except maybe that I should have done this 10 yrs ago) The hardest part of the journey was getting through the maze of demands made by my insurance to get the approval. I just bought new scrubs for work (I am a nurse) and lo and behold, size 2X, (this is significant because I was a 5X at time of surgery) I am thrilled, and so happy to feel well. It's so good to meet you all, and to have a group of people who understand my point of reference!!! Here's to being born in the 60's but learning to live in the 2000's!!!

I'm 54 and had my surgery 8 weeks ago. Doing very well, lost 43 lbs and feeling a lot better! Back doing the work I love but couldn't do for years because of my weight (garden center). Finally on track, and wish I had done this years ago.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
