Hey Jacqui, You and chickie have both blitzed it for sure.You have done very well. My only concern is that running is very hard on the body. Are you worried long term about knee trouble/arthritis etc and permanent damage? If you are not resting your body at all are you worried that you will wear it out earlier and have long term damage?:) Susannah

I go to the gym 5/wk and do a full body work out with my trainer 1 hour a week and just started the couch to 5K running plan last night (thanks for that link babygirl, I really think I can do this!). I cannot remember the last time I drank a protien shake. I am 2 yrs out but I do have another 50 pounds at least that I want to get rid of. I am working out like a dog but I really have to, to keep motivated. I find if I skip the gym today it is too easy to skip the gym tormorrow and so on. I am trying to make this exercising become a way of life for me, if that means every day.... then every day it shall be.

p.s. WHAT is spinning????

Hey I ran 20 minutes straight this weekend and I am only on week 6.

Spinning class is a cycling class on a "spinning" bike. Seriously if there is an actual term for it I don't know it lol. It is an upright bike and is a bit sleeker than those used at the gym, and the class is led by the instuctor. You tighen and loosen the gear (flywheel) to simulate going up and down hills and you stand and pedal and have your hands in different positions as if you are racing. Every class I have been to has always been set to music and the speed of the ride matches the speed of the music. Very, very cool class. For first timers i would recommend either a gel seat cover and/or some biking shorts. Those seats can tear the hieny up.

ok, spinning seems a bit daunting to me - just by your description. I will see what kind of damage I can do with this running first - then maybe I will be brave enough to give spinning a shot.

I am not worried at all. Running is only hard on your body if you push too far beyond it's limitations, and if you run with an injury that needs to be rested.

According to "The Complete Book of Running for Women", running is good for the joints.

(I am paraphrasing here to avoid copy write issues)

Regular running will not ruin joints. It will improve flexibility, and range of motion. Injury causes arthritis, not running.

Your body adapts very well to running and strengthens up for it over time, IF you take it slowly and build up sensibly. Injury happens when you overdo things.

I do the circuits precisely to rest the running muscles and do something different without being inactive - yes there's running involved but its on the treadmill and I'd probably only run 2kms total in an hour long circuit, hardly anything. I run outside on concrete only twice a week or so, unless I'm gearing up for a fun run.

Running may be hard on the body I guess, but being fat is WAY harder, I know that simply by how I feel and I figure if I run and it keeps me lighter, then they kind of cancel each other out, kwim? Anyway, I do have some weak spots like my ankle and a bit of a sciatic problem that may one day mean I have to give it up but until then, I love it! I really dont see why I cant still be running when I'm 70 - its inactivity that makes you old, stiff and and sore.

Hey Girlz, Chickie no apologies needed. Mate this whole banding caper is not all beer and skittles that's for sure. Other people reckon we have taken the easy way out. WTF???!!!!! You still have to work at it every day.

Hey Jacqui do you remember that old guy that used to run everywhere in his gumboots? He did marathons etc. Can't remember his name, but he was still running in his seventies before he died I recall.

Hi gang.

Just a statistics thing...the non exercisers are not going to click on your poll. Go figure. :)

My gym is at work, Monday through Friday I spend my lunch hour there. Two days a week I go back in after work (shared custody of my kid, and I don't need to rush to pick her up.) So that's 3.5 hours of cardio a week and 3.5 hours of strength training.

On my non kid weekends and some week nights I bike long distances. I'm shooting for a 50 mile ride by August. I just did my first 20 mile ride since I was teen on Sunday!

On my kid weekends we spend hours at the pool, bike together where we stop and pick flowers every 100 feet, or walk around the zoo. I tend not to push too hard then...but I make sure we do SOMETHING! I have to run her like a puppy, she has too much energy!

As for crazy restriction people on here, Chickie, I feel you. When people complain or brag that they could only eat 5 french fries I think WTF?! Wouldn't you want to get the best quaility food in you if you could only eat 3 ounces?

I have yet to get a fill. Sometimes I get jealous of people who are losing without exercise, because they aren't eating much. But I know I am fueling my body and it is getting stronger and healthier. My rate of loss is good, so I try to focus on me not everyone else. Ya know?

Hey Juli, Good on ya! Keep plugging away at it. I agree with you re the food by the way. I am amazed people are even eating french fries or hot chips as we call them.

Now my run looks "normal" but still feels low impact, you dont go out and bound around at full steam, its hard to explain, but there's a full on run and there's jogging? Its not the full on pounding you experience when you do it when a) you're not experienced at it and :) you're heavy.

I voted 4 times a week, but recently (since school has been out), I've beengoing about 5 times a week. I do 3-5 miles on the bike, arms, legs, ass, back, and just started doing abs (140 crunches) this week. I get a really good sweat at the gym...I also have gone 2x in one day!

I quit smoking in Feb. to prepare for surgery, so I need to go and workout at my own pace. Overweight former smokers have their own special issues. But, I am loving my workouts.

I recently bought a Ipod for my workouts, and love that too!! I love rockin out and workin out! During the school year, I get up at 5 to work out (even before the band, but not religiously).

I do make a Protein Shake for Breakfast everyday, but because I love it...and it feels good. I use 4 oz of low carb yougart, 1 banana, strawberries/blueberries/rasperries, 1/3 c. of skim milk, and 1 scoop of Protein Powder all mixed in the magic bullet. Then about 10am, I have cottage cheese.

I am happy w/ where I am...although I have lots still to lose. I feel great. I am new on the journey, but I am enjoying the ride of getting to know myself better.

Okay,

I've posted this on some of the other places I frequent on here, so if I'm being redundant forgive me.

I bought a road bike. A new slick I'm shooting for speeds of 20 mile per hour by summer's end, bike. I've hooked up with a group of women riders and they are so encouraging. They go on 30-50 mile trips every weekend. I hope to get with them soon. I'm going on a baby ride with some members on Tuesday.

For you running chicas, I so want to run. I tried when I was about 270 and after a week, my knee said no, you've got to weigh less. So I hopped on a bike.

I still want to run and I will. I thought I'd pick it up again around 225. At what weights did you start running?

Did I tell you I'm excited about my fancy new bike???

<p>I had my surgery at 245 lb and 5ft 10, BMI 35, and I think I went out for my first run when I'd lost about 14kg, I would have been maybe 210-220lb, I guess. So in the scheme of weight loss surgery patients, being so tall, I guess I *was* pretty light, carrying maybe 50 extra pounds.</p> <p> </p> <p>I also wasnt sedentary, I'd always been active and began some really serious exercise about 3 months before surgery, I'd worked up to about 45 minutes on the elliptical at quite a high resistance, so I was quite fit too. </p> <p> </p> <p>Mainly what I had to develop that I didnt have for running was lower body strenght. Cardiovascularly I was more than OK, but I had to take it slowly to build up my leg muscles and avoid injury. I have legs like Iron now, lol.

Biking at first is a great idea, it will build up fitness and prepare you to run later. </p>

i go 6 times a week, taking 1 day off.

cardio routine - elliptical 20 mins, bike 30 mins, elliptical 10 mins cool down (6 times)

strength training - full body every other day

i cant wait to start running. my heart is in shape for it, but i am petrified of damaging my knees further so i will wait another 70ish pounds i think. that's ok - it gives me a goal.

and chickie - please dont leave, you are one of my inspirations!!

      Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
      I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
