Perplexed. Surgeon says no such thing as a "stall"

Recommended Posts

Have you considered printing all these responses and giving (or mailing) them to your surgeon? He sounds like the same guy that says bariatric surgery is taking the easy way out. Grrrr....

I've read all the posts in this thread and if I were you I'd only pay attention to about half of them. Don't worry about apologizing for what you said your meant. Some people that come off as being harsh really do mean well, and obviously none of us has all the answers. If we did, we wouldn't be asking for information or support on this site.

Yes, stalls do exist and they can be called a number of different things. I think all the reasons people have given for the possible reasons for the slowing down of weight loss are valid. Our bodies definitely have a mind of their own, and I'm learning that as frustrating as it is, we'll only lose as quickly as our own body will let the fat go.

At this point try to focus on the fact that if you're following the program you'll get to your goal eventually. My doctor is much like yours. He's a total jerk and talks down to everyone. He also says there's no such thing as a stall OR a plateau. He always question whether or not I'm doing what I should as far as Protein, fluids and exercise. I try not to let it bother me any more. There actually was an appointment right before my surgery where I almost left in tears. His nurses and my nutritionist assure me that I'm on track and not to worry so much about how many pounds I lose each week. They all look at the big picture and pay more attention to the fact that the scale IS moving in the right direction.

Hang in there, as I'm sure you're doing just fine. Keep positive thoughts and don't sweat the small stuff. ;)

My doctor says stalls happen because the lower your weight goes it gets harder. Mine said to cut out more carbs and hit the gym more. I did that and it helped. I am a slow loser so it has just been 3 lbs since my last visit a few weeks ago.

My medical team said weight loss is different from individual to individual and it's not linear. If we think about everyday has a different energy burn rate. Some days I move lots, others not so much. It would follow that even if my caloric intake was exactly the same everyday (which is not) I would have different rates of weight loss. I try to keep it within 200 calories difference but at the same time I do not want to become a calorie counting addict. Trust me it's possible. Been there!

I have read many articles regarding how we lose weight after WLS. Even though a stall is a term, not losing any weight for days and even weeks does happen. It's horrible to go through because every time it happens you think you will not be able to accomplish your goals but soon after the scale moves again. I have had so many stalls and it's not all related to what I eat. Because I recall a few days ago, I had two Hawaiian bread rolls one day (not all at once but a bite at a time with each meal)) and lost a pound that day. I had not lost any weight in a few days at that point. So, was it a miracle Hawaiian bread diet? I think not. Next day, I continued my plan and I have lost weight everyday.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
